Games not being detected

Hi, first post here. I recently obtained a Pi 3 and put RetroPie in it and added games to an external HDD- a rather lot of them. When finding the games though it only seems to detect 683 of the ROMs then stops. Is this a known issue or is it because I have so many? Thanks!
