New category
-
Hello first of all I would like to introduce myself, my name is Javier and I am excited about retropie.
I would like to know if anyone could help me. Is it possible to create a new category within Emulationstation, called for example "favorites" where to run roms of other emulators through some .sh file? How could I do this? Is there anyone who has already done it?
I hope someone can help me.
regards -
@Javier It certainly is possible as I have created new sections in ES for Doom and Quake mods and for rom hacks. The process is far from straightforward so I'll create a page on the wiki. Expect it to be available in a day or two.

@dudleydes with some of the new developments with ES hopefully this manual process will no longer be necessary if we get proper tags and filtering

Thank you very much for your quick response.
It seemed like a fastastic way to group all my favorite games from different emulators into one category and to be able to execute them from that same place.Regards

@herb_fargus Thank for the info. Is there a date when these new features will be available in ES? If it's a month or two, then it's not worth publishing a wiki page. If it's the summer, then it may be worth having a page in the short-term (or I could give the details on this thread). I have a draft so it's no trouble.

@dudleydes I think any metadata changes are still a little while away, so in the meantime I'd be interested to give your tutorial a read.

Given that it can still take time, I would ask Dudleyde to help me to create this new category of favorites and what would be those .sh files that would run those roms.
Greetings and many thanks -
I was looking to do the same kinda thing but with a 'Nes Mini' section.
I know I know, they are all in the NES section! But I think it'd be kinda cool.
So would that be do'able? Nes Mini section, with the 20 (or whatever it is) games it has & a menu icon?
Has anyone already done it?
[I'm a total noob when it comes to lines of code etc....]

@dudleydes yeah I don't see the changes happening anytime in the immediate future. Having a guide isn't a problem so long as people are aware of the implications of having custom es_systems.cfg

I think this a great move i just rediscovered my original modded Xbox and the emulators on them and most of those programs have a favorites section with i am finding very useful.

I have created the wiki page on how to add a new system in ES. You can find it at the link below:
https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Add-a-New-System-in-EmulationStation
Here Be Dragons. This process can be a long and repetitive one and requires knowledge of finding, creating and editing text files on your Pi, using the command line, manually maintaining EmulationStation config files and possibly creating new themes and vector logos. If you wish to learn how do all this, then this is your opportunity.
If you are looking to create a favourites lists within a system, then you may wish to consider the child-friendly version of EmulationStation which has this feature
Please let me know of any errors, omissions, improvements in the tutorial and I'll update.

Thank you very much for the fantastic tutorial. It's really good. Right now I start running it.
Greetings and many thanks -
After a few days of testing I have managed to create my favorites folder, where I can run the roms that I like the most. Many thanks for your tutorial Dudleydes is fantastic.
Regards and thank you all
