Keyboard won't work during gaming

Hi!
When I start my Retropie and choose a game (The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time) my keyboard, which I use as a controller, won't work.
The only button that works during the game (still in the start screen where it says 'press start') is P, but this only turns the screen black.
But when I quit the game, the keyboard works perfectly fine again (in the Emulation Station menu).
Do you have an idea on how to fix this ?- Raspberry Pi 3
- wireless keyboard with usb adapter
- Retropie 4.1

@pieguy which n64 emulator are you using? Right after you select a game where it says press a button to configure it says what emulator.
