Mayflash dolphinbar and AdvanceMAME 1.4
-
Hi,
I successfully installed and play light gun games on my bartop using Mayflash dolphinbar and AdvanceMAME 1.4.
I can play to :- Area51 / Max force
- Jurassic Park
- Alien 3
- Lethal enforcers
- Pont Blank 1 & 2
but I have a problem with the coin and start buttons. They are mapped to my xin-mo but it's not useful.
The dolphinbar is used on mode 2 (mouse + keyboard).
Do you know how to configure advancemame 1.4 to map the coin and start buttons .In addition, Time Crisis works (it's a little bit slow but playable) except 2 things :
- how the pedal is managed ? Today I have to push the trigger and quickly fire to shot ennemies
- I have a distance, a space between the mouse cursor and the real shot : do you know how to fix it ? It's not due to the dolphinbar nor the raspberry, I have the same problem on my laptop (Ubuntu)
Finally, the 3D gun games don't work (House of the dead, Virtua Cop and Virtua Cop 2) : there is just an ugly background with the mouse cursor but no 3D graphics. Do you know if it can be fixed ?

Wow, I had actually given up hope that this was possible within RetroPie. Outside of your stated issues, how well do the 2D games you listed perform?
Do you know how to configure advancemame 1.4 to map the coin and start buttons .
Will it not bring up the MAME configuration menu by pressing the 'tab' key on a keyboard?
-
The 2D games run really well without any lag.
I just configured the framebuffer to 0 for Time Crisis but it's still slow. No overclocking.I didn't try to plug a keyboard to the raspberry because I only have a Rii mini and it causes conflicts with the wii mote... I can always try later...

Very good to hear. Those are reasonably(ish) intensive titles.

Once in the MAME menu, you should be able to map the buttons from your Wiimote to the start and coin functions. Cool stuff, keep us updated.

Couple questions for you if you don't mind:
Do you have one of those gun-shaped enclosures for the WiiMote? How do you like it? Which one? I'm a firearm aficionado and the WiiMote's shape always turns me off...
Have you played these games with an actual lightgun (like on a CRT TV) anytime recently? How does the accuracy/sensitivity of the WiiMote compare? Like does the shot actually go where you aim?
How do you calibrate everything so your shots are on target?
And last, I don't think the Raspberry Pi 3 is fast enough to play any quasi-recent (like mid to late 90's???) 3d MAME games. Or at least none of the Tekken-era 3d games ever worked for me (always super slow).

My personal favorite is the Nyko Perfect Shot. They're a bit pricey now, but I bought five of them several years ago and they look and feel fantastic.
does the shot actually go where you aim?
Sadly, in every emulator I've seen, any game that originally required aiming becomes dependent on an onscreen reticle. However, this could actually be eliminated in the future by implementing built-in or even outside calibration software. There are arcade titles and even a few console titles that have a calibration modes built-in, but it's not universal.

I would definitely agree.

@Dochartaigh I have gun-shaped enclosures : the Link's zapper (special to use) and a noname. The noname is too noisy and the trigger is too soft...
I have ever played light gun games (Time Crisis on PSX and HOTD and Confidential Mission on Dreamcast) and the experience is quiet close...
I have just a lake of accuracy due to the dolphinbar position relative to the screen (~10cm on top of it).I'm waiting for reicast manage the mouse to retrieve HOTD and Confidential Mission.
I did no calibration... Just plug and play :)
Same thing with Mad Dog McCree and Who Shot Johnny Rock ? on DosBox. -

Very cool indeed. I have to try that.

I went out and bought a Dolphin bar as a result of this thread and it works great!!! I've gotten just about every 2d shooter working on advancemame .98/ 1.4. Even Area 51 works well, it drops some frames here and there and the music slows when changing scenes. I even got Lethal Enforcers 2 to work by enabling cheats as the reload is broken. Thanks for the info!!! Anybody have any luck getting mouse support to work on any of the retroarch cores like lr_mame_2003?

Man. Now i need one. I agree with @mediamogul, that is my preferred gun for the wiimote. Or the cabelas gun if you need a rifle
-
I tried the tab menu to remap wiimote keys without success :
- in mode 2, no way to capture buttons 1 and 2
- in mode 1, I can capture buttons 1 and 2 but loose exit button...
Is there a way to reconfigure advmame exit button ?
Same thing for Time crisis problem, the space between mouse cursor and real shot. I didn"t find a way to calibrate it...
Any idea ?

@Jander3456 What is your full list of working gun games?
-
@Febbweiss have you tried into dipswitch settings for time crisis? In a real time crisis you can calibrate the gun in the settings
-
When I load most of the gun games in AdvanceMAME 1.4. I get a X or crosshair in the center of the screen that never goes away. Is there a way to turn that off?
-
@edmaul69 Yes I tried to calibrate the gun but I failed...
@HurricaneFan The extra crosshair is for player 2. Don't know if it's possible to remove it...
I tried the advmame 3 version (it must improve performances) but it doesn't work.
I have the following issue :- c74.bin (NOT FOUND) NO GOOD DUMP KNOWN
If I add namcoc74 bios, I have the following :
- c74.bin NO GOOD DUMP KNOWN
An idea of what to do ?
-
@Jander3456 I have a Wiimote/Dolphinbar one too, but for some reason, I can never get Area 51 to actually work. I mean the rom itself wont work not sure why. What is the filename of yours?
-
@Febbweiss Did not know that about Mad Dog and Johnny Rock on Dosbox. Thanks for the heads up!
-
@BGallagherLA I don't know the rom name. If you check the /dev/shm/runcommand.log file, what is the error ? For Area51, you need a CHD file. The only location where it works for me is the ~/.advmame/image folder. It didn't work when I placed it into the ~/Retropie/roms/mame-advmame folder or a sub folder...
-
@Febbweiss Hmm ok. Didn't know that about CHD file. So you place the CHD file in the image folder and the rom ZIP file in the advmame rom folder? Or does CHD file go in area51.zip, and the whole thing goes in image folder?
-
@BGallagherLA You need both : the CHD file in the image folder and the rom file in the usual folder as you said ;)
