      Please can someone help..
ES won't boot and displays this message:

Terminate called after throwing am instance of 'std :: out_of_range' what. Basic_string::substr: ___pos (which is 31) > this->size() (which is 20)

Completely baffled as to what the issue is?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

@Robster1727 You need to look here first: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first

Then maybe give us a bit more info so we can help.

@Robster1727 if you read the post it details what you are meant to do if you can't find the answer by searching the forums and the wiki. If you did read it, you'd be providing further info in the format given in that link.

I'm not lecturing you, I'm telling you to give us the information as listed in the terms and conditions of signing up to the forum. Without all of the information it makes it much much harder for people to help as RetroPie can be built in multiple ways on multiple hardware with many custom tweaks.

I was blunt with you so you could provide the information quicker and allow the forum members to try and help you.
