PS3 controller w/ advanced mame

Hello everyone! I'm running a Pi3 model B with RetroPie 4.1.14 and having issues with my Mame emulator. When I start a game a press TAB to configure my controls I can configure everything on my PS3 controler except sqaure,x,triangle and circle. When I highlight P1 Button one and press, lets say circle, it just sits there and sits there. Once I press another button or a keyboard button it will register that for P1 Button 1. I've googled everywhere and searched your forums and can't seemed to find anything. I have also deleted advmame and reinstalled/updated it. Deleted my controller from Reptropie and re-added it and still the same issue. I'm incredible new at this and my last idea would be editing the config file, but I have no clue as to what i would need to type in each parameter. Thanks and sorry if there is a solution I passed up.

@fdrslegs You need to edit the AdvanceMAME config files found In the folder
/opt/retropie/configs/mame-advmame. For each of the rc config files, change line 13 so it readsdevice_joystick sdl. -

@dudleydes thx, after edit line 13, must reboot before taking effect, that's weird.
