I'm very new to all of this, so forgive my ignorance. I couldn't find this topic anywhere online.

Is there any way to run RetroPie from a computer, so that everything would run smoother with so much more power behind it, and then just use a network connected Pi for controller input and video output to a TV?

I've been having some performance issues with certain games, even after overclocking a RPi3, so it seems like this would be an awesome solution as long as the input lag wasn't too bad. It would certainly lighten the load on the Pi.

@blterry1 you can build RetroPie on Ubuntu machines. There is info on how to do this in the wiki documents here: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/RetroPie-Ubuntu-16.04-LTS-x86-Flavor/

Retropie in a NES - Pi 3 with Mausberry circuit shutdown switch wired to buttons and 8bitdo NesPro30 controller
Retropie in a Saturn Controller - Pi Zero, GPIO controls using DB9 driver
        Retropie in a PSX - Pi3

@markyh444 I've seen that, but how would that enable me to use the Pi as a controller input/video output device?

@blterry1 Sorry, I skim-read your post. My bad.

I think I've tried this and Steam didn't like it when EmulationStation tried to launch another process so I wasn't able to actually launch any emulators.

There might be another way to do it by manually added the Windows version of EmulationStation to Nvidia Experience search list and from your launch script you add something like -app EmulationStation (or whatever the file is actually called in Windows).

After you get moonlight install/setup and you're successfully paired with your Windows PC, you can run moonlight list on the Pi and EmulationStation will be on the list.
