What is best for Bartop MDF or???

What is the best material for making a bartop cabinet,is it MDF and what is the best thickness 12mm,15mm,18mm.
I hear its hard to cover with paint. -
@Freko mine is made out of a birch plywood looks great. Bonus that it can be stained. I have never heard that MDF was difficult to paint though.

I have built plenty of stuff using MDF, it paints up very nice. The one important thing you must do is, seal and sand the edges so they are nice and smooth.

Yeah I was told I had to fine sand MDF,then light coat of paint,then sand again and repeat until it is fully sealed before finishing with top coats.

@darthpaul Remember to wear a dust mask when working with MDF.
