Make the desktop readable for this couch potato :)

Pi Model 3 running 4.1. Image downloaded from here. Installed Pixel with RetroPie Setup (raspbian tools).
I have a small full HD tv. EmulationStation and Kodi are perfectly readable from a distance, but the icons and text on the pixel desktop are too small. How can I scale things so they appear bigger on screen or adjust the resolution? I had no luck using xrandr. Maybe another window manager? I don't want to change the settings in the config.txt, just for the desktop. Who can help me out?

@J.Beau more of a raspberry pi question than a retropie question, a couple seconds on Google yielded this result:

@J.Beau did you install retropie first or pixel? I want to install pixel on top of my retropie but i can only find one google entry of someone having several things do not work right in pixel if you do it this way from retropie setup.
-
@edmaul69 that's because it needs gvfs as a dependency
-
@herb_fargus so can i install that and then pixel and be good?
-
@edmaul69 I believe so. Try it and see

@herb_fargus i moved from north carolina usa to colorado usa like 3200 miles away. My stuff arrives tomorrow so as soon as i get everything done moved and set up im going to try. Thank you for the help

@herb_fargus Thanks for the link, but that didn't work out. I guess I have to look for another window manager. I read XFCE and Enlightenment are light enough for the Pi and can be configured for HiDPI displays.

RetroPie first.

Actually, i did this yesterday. It was quite easy, and it's very nice. I wrote a little about it here

I installed Xfce. Scaled fonts, icons and cursor. Looks a bit odd, but it works. Emulationstation, kodi and the desktop are all accesible from the couch :)
