Best way to learn is just to get into the code and play with things til they work. That's all I've done.

@KANE81 I think I know how you feel. I've made/contributed with some (maybe two?) scriptmodules and yet feel a bit lost many times. :)
The tips @herb_fargus gave above is the way to go.
Although not directly related to the RetroPie-Setup code, playing with
runcommand-onstart.sh
and-onend.sh
