The last time I build a PC was in my early 20 which is roughly 15-20 years ago and we didn't had water cooling like today. Hell the see-through cases just started to become popular those days. Now you got all the fancy RGB lights and crazy looking cases and cooling systems. At first I wanted to go with a GTX 1060 6GB ($300) or even a GTX 1070 ($400) but for $100-200 bucks more I was able to get the 1080Ti. Right time, right place I guess.
From what I saw on youtube there are 3 ways to cool a CPU
- CPU fans
Pros: easy install, nearly maintenance-free except for the occasional dust-off.
Cons: Not so effective cooling as water/liquid, loud fan noises at high temps.- AIO liquid cooling
Pros: easy install, no maintenance, very quiet.
Cons: depends on the model it can be costly, liquid cannot be replaced therefore after a certain time span you need to replace the whole unit.- Custom loop
Pros: looks friggin nice, cools very well and quiet, liquid can be replaced
Cons: very costly, not easy to install for beginners, needs maintenance.Did I get that correct?
I have a long way still ahead of me. I am not PC build ready and can only afford one piece at the time. This time the graphics card, next time the motherboard or CPU and so on. And hopefully the RAM prices will finally drop because those are just insane at the moment. Meanwhile I will keep simulating my build on pcpartpicker[dot]com -
Yeah that's right, I'm certainly no expert myself and didn't want to attempt custom liquid cooling so all in one solutions seemed ideal and it was really easy to install - obviously I can't comment on the longevity yet.
It will probably depend on which CPU you go for whether liquid cooling is worth it though. For many CPUs air cooling will be perfectly fine - just go for one of the bigger after market air coolers and it will still be really quiet. -
@flyingtomahawk That's the kind of subtle nerdry I need more of in my life. I wonder if those belts are a Japan-exclusive thing. Also, Bandai makes clothing?
-
I was surprised myself. I didn't expect to find those today. They looked great and for $20 a piece I thought sure why not. They look subtle. Found them at a clothing store which you would never expect to find game related stuff.

I've just finished a theme based on the Neo Geo mini menus (it was @FlyingTomahawk photos of all those neo geo minis that inspired me to give it a go):

Oh wow, that was quick!
Was that something you've been working on for a while?I also hope that one day retroflag, which makes those popular NES and SNES cases might do a NeoGeo and MegaDrive case.
Then i would be forced to get 2-3 PIs just to have a matching case for each theme. -
@ruckage Damn, thats a nice looking PC case. I'm not one for flashy builds, but that looks good.
I like looking at builds like that, but I could never have something like that. I'd get sick of the colors in about a day or so.
I'm more for the understated

I saw a few videos on youtube of the system and quite liked the menu (though personally I'm not sure it's the best fit for Neo Geo myself). I've been planning to do a proper test of grid view so it was a fun quick project.
Some cases based on more obscure systems would be great though I can understand they want to appeal to the masses.Did you see the post a few days ago for a Megadrive model kit that's being released? https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/18953/what-i-ve-been-working-on-for-the-last-year-official-licensed-mega-drive-scale-model

I totally agree. My PC is very plain and getting pretty old now. Apart from anything that PC I built was ridiculously expensive and a big chunk of the cost was for the way it looks (the rgb fans cost around £180 and the case was £160) - I'd rather have it look plain and save some money.

For 2 days work, well done!
Yeah I have seen that post about the MD model. But AFAIK it has not been made available yet right?
The retroflag guys build specifically for RPis which is nice. I contacted them and they said they don't plan to release any MD or NeoGeo cases anytime soon. :(Visual stuff on a PC that sits around at home is not really necessary since you are the only person seeing it. Unless you are a streamer or somebody that has lots of visitors and needs something to brag about. :)

I'm quite surprised retroflag aren't at least planning a megadrive/genesis case as that was an incredibly popular system.
My friend is a bit of a show off hence the flashy case. The case and fans were his choice and the pc was originally going to be hidden in a cupboard which I thought was funny. He does have it on display now after I pointed out that the flashy case was pointless if no one can see it. Another downside with a glass case like that is it shows the dirt/dust really quickly so you have to constantly clean it where as my PC is dragged out and cleaned once a year if it's lucky :D.

THAT is what surprised me too. I mean c'mon a MEGADRIVE! as popular as a SNES and they have no plans? Or maybe they just said it that way so I wouldn't spill the news too early in the www. Who knows, but it would be a missed business opportunity.

@flyingtomahawk I have that Genesis USB hub that I put a Pi 3 in and it works really great. Unfortunately now they are unobtainium and are really pricey on eBay.

Here are some recent additions for me.
Kirby & the Amazing Mirror
Some MasterSystem controllers in pretty nice shape for less than the cost that I typically see a single one sell for
I ordered some custom game cases for some loose games I have (Super Mario World came with my SNES, I lost the box to Mario Paint, I never had a box for the Super Game Boy I got in college, and my SD2SNES came in a box that doesn't work well on my shelf). They look nice but took FOREVER to ship.
A friend in Australia sent me a surprise: the rare gold DMG backpack buddy. I now have a full set!
A box full of awesome arrived from a good friend as a belated birthday gift. Far too much to include in one photo, but the gaming stuff included Makaimura for Famicom, Super Columns for Game Gear, an R4 card, the Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack, Nintendo controller mints, and, because I like boxed games, Uno and Skip Bo for Game Boy Advance
I managed to get a really great deal on a Super Game Boy 2 (CIB for around half of what a loose one is currently selling for). It's in amazing shape. I just wish the box were a more standard size so I could put it in a box protector. It's just slightly larger than a US SNES box. For now it is unprotected on my shelf.
Also, after totally loving the English fan translation, I'm on the lookout for a CIB copy of カエルの為に鐘は鳴る (Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru - For Frog the Bell Tolls) for a reasonable price, but right now it seems to be going for around $50 which is more than I want to spend.

@obsidianspider nice haul!! Now do you have all 3 d-pad versions of master system controllers?
-
@edmaul69 Three 3 D-Pad versions? I have three MasterSystem controllers, but all are the same.
-
@obsidianspider these are the other two. The joystick unscrews on the one and usually is missing.

Something you don't see everyday, even here in Japan.
Is that even possible? I thought japenese people have seen everything. :D
Everything
Oh My Goodness, this made my day!

@ddoherty958 It's all fun and games until someone gets blue shelled...

Oh I see that blue shell and I think “ah. What do I do now?!?!?”
