Seeing as how coins and hotkey exiting both depend on the select button, the two problems are likely to be related. Have you tried remapping your controller in Emulation Station? It could be that the select button was improperly mapped the first time.

well I downloaded the newest version put some roms in and it dont work so not sure what you say there...

            Pi Model: 3
            RetroPie Version Used: 3.7
            Built From: SD Image
USB Devices connected: keyboard and a xbox1 controller, also tried a usb SNES controller
            Controller used: see usb ^^
Error messages received: coin up wont work
Guide used: the FAQ in the original post
            File: any mame game
Emulator: mame4all is where my roms are
How to replicate the problem: a new install of 3.7 image from this site, configure a controller with the "boot controller set up thing in the GUI" put some roms in mame4all , try and coin up

When launching a game and the white launch box shows up, does it say "Mame4all-Pi" or "lr-imame4all"?

Unless you have a specific reason to do otherwise, try relocating your roms to the "mame-libretro". Next, reboot the system, go into your Mame menu and launch a game. When the white box appears, press the button specified within it for setup and change the default emulator to "lr-imame4all".

Unless you have a specific reason to do otherwise, this change will ultimately use the same emulator and support the same rom set, but add all the benefits of using RetroArch. One of those benefits is gamepad settings more closely tied to what you set up in Emulation Station.
