So I know it's coming sooner or later.. the dev's will be releasing a new version of RetroPie, with all the bells and whistles that have been worked on, added, and fixed since the last version. Since I became a user right before the latest version was released, I just installed the new version on a fresh SD card and started from scratch again. Since then, I've done a pretty heavy customization of my setup, using various tricks, modified settings, customized controller schemes (using xboxdrv/etc). So I was wondering, when a new version does finally become released, is there anything special I'd need to do to get the new update? Does it just fluidly install overtop of your existing setup, or does it install as a fresh/clean setup and require going back and changing everything again? I'd just like to know for future reference. I would suspect that any and all updates that are released in a full new version would be easily obtainable manually by going through the setup menus and installing from source. Just curious. I have no prior of a new version coming.. don't get excited newbies!

@hansolo77 I've never had an issue just installing updates from the RetroPie setup menu. I download them once a week or so. I haven't noticed any of my settings messed with.

Yeah that's what I figured. I was just curious if "when" a new version comes out if you have to download the new version directly, or if it's possible to just update from within your existing setup without losing any settings.

@hansolo77 if you joined/installed 5 months ago there have been several large updates since :)

to update an existing setup, you want to look at https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/updating-retropie - you'd need to use the 'update the setup script' option first, and then 'update all installed packages'.

very recommended to take a backup before anything, though. it shouldn't mess with your existing setup, but still.

Yeah I've got my head around it all. I was just wanting to know for future reference. I've been actively updating the core packages and things every few weeks or so, so I'm good. Thanks!

@dankcushions I got my main system set up about 6 or 7 months ago and I haven't updated since. I have it pretty much how I want it and don't see a reason to change just yet. I do have another card for testing new stuff though, so I'm ready to go through it all again I might start my setup from scratch and leave out a few things I no longer want.
