how do I set up system specific controls

Hey all
Recently got a raspberry pI
(Pi3 model B if it makes a difference) and set up the latest retropie on it
It works great but I do have a problem of sorts.I want to set up specific controls for certain systems.
I've got a dualshock 4 controller and for example i want to mimic the psx layout x being x square is square etcDreamcast x being a
And so onHow can I achieve this
I'm not talking about universal control changes just individual per emulator remappingI can't seem to find anything online but it love it if I could do it.

For the RetroArch cores, a good place to start is here:
As for everything else, the individual pages for each system details controller mapping.

You can also use external mapping software if you find any of the default methods lacking. Linux Joystick Mapper is one to consider as well as xboxdrv. Below is a guide to setting up xboxdrv on a per-emulator basis that deals directly with RetroPie:
