VICE emulator not working

When I try to play several versions of batman the caped crusader on my retropie, it gets broken in a different way such as some things not appearing or when I click on an item I am not able to exit the menu screen. I fear other roms will get corrupted as well. They are .tap files an I have went through the tutorials. Am I doing something wrong? Any help appreciated. 😁
