Defender and Stargate have a fairly unusual control scheme where you press a button for thrust and another button for reversing direction which I find a bit awkward, to be honest. I've got enough buttons on my home made arcade panel to play both games the way they ought to be played, but the spacing of the buttons means it is difficult to play them properly. I've seen patches for Mame versions 0.151, 0.153, 0.155, 0.162 and 0.169 which change Defender's and Stargate's control systems to an 8-way joystick scheme. None of those patches relate to Retropie mame versions, so I'm just wondering whether anyone has tried to recompile any version of Mame for Retropie to change the control schemes for these games. If not, no worries. My system details are below.

[edit] There is some reference online to pre-0.84 versions of Mame (which I'm assuming would include romset 0.78 used by lr-mame2003) allowing an 8 way joystick scheme for Defender/Stargate. I've got lr-mame2003 installed but only for certain games not including Defender and Stargate. Has anyone tried lr-mame2003 with Defender and Stargate and changed the controls to 8-way?
