Hi guys, I am on 4.1 and looking to update to 4.2.

Is there a way to do this over the network as I seem to have lost my microSD card reader :( If not what are the instructions when I do find it ? The instructions im reading seem to start off with going to setup and then selecting updated all packages, but im wondering about the whole process - do i put the new image in a specific folder on the existing OS formatted microSD or would i be easier to just format the card and start over (i don't mind having to re-upload the roms).

As mentioned on the wiki page:

The conventional way to update RetroPie and install new features is through the setup script.
The setup script can be accessed from the RetroPie menu in emulationstation.

Before making any major updates it is important to make backups just in case (see backup options below).

which i understand, however does the script need any files locally ? how does it work, will it connect to the internet over my network and grab the latest file ?

Your raspberry will need a working internet connection.
If that is the case just follow the steps on the wiki page.
This could take some time, depending on the amount of packages to update.
            Hope that helps :D

Edit: The images are just for fresh installation. They are not used for updating/upgrading

Great, okay thanks. I just wasn't sure if the whole "update selected packages" selection would look for the latest ver locally.

              Thanks for your help !
