How to reverse lookup emulators if I have roms?

Like the title says, I have ROMS, just don't know which emulator they use and don't know what folder to put them in. Is there a tool/method to figure it out? I know sometimes the extensions indicate if its for NES or something, but a lot of my extensions are more generic (.03a, .m3, .u52, etc...).

You can look up the file extensions + the corresponding emulator/system here:
https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Supported-Systems

If they aren't listed there they can not be emulated by any of the emulators coming with retropie (or installed in the "manage package" section)

@kevreh those sound like the sort of files that you'd get in mame .zips. if that's the case... don't :)

"if that's the case...don't"......... meaning don't bother looking them up because we know they're for mame? Guessing so. But yes, their zipped up.

Thanks everyone. While I'm thinking of it, what do you guys use, if anything, to validate them before putting them on Retropie? Something like ROM Center or ClrMamePro?

@kevreh I used clrmamepro for all of my roms (in no-intro format) and it worked perfectly! So I would recommend using clrmamepro :)

Do you need to specify the emulator in clrmamepro before rebuilding roms?

because of the way mame works, starting from random roms is generally the wrong way to go. knowing they are mame is one thing, but you'd need to know which specific romset they are for, which isn't easy.

i wouldn't even rebuild. all the mame emulators in retropie use specific romsets, so just start from there.
