@anthonyp555 You can buy an HDMI to RCA cable for conversion.. I believe if I read correctly, even the 3.5mm audio jack can be used for audio/video as well with the correct 3.5mm to RCA cable.Someone correct me if I read wrong on the 3.5mm jack.

@bytethis the rca jack does red white yellow composite. An hdmi to red blue green component cable wont work because the device itself has to be able to convert it as those cables dont have hardware in them. You can get a converter to do that but to expensive to go that route.

@anthonyp555 I am going from hdmi to vga and tomorrow evening i will find out if a vga to component cable works if it arrives in the mail tomorrow.

@edmaul69 I wasn't talking about a composite cable ( Red Blue.Green)...I was talking about an RCA cable --> Red White Yellow. I know the difference in output. I have a full surround with everything I own and can hook up to it.and took me hours to perfect :-) Even my pi..lol..

@bytethis a composite cable is red white yellow. A component cable is red green blue. The connector design which is an rf coaxial connector got nicknamed rca since it was designed by rca.

@bytethis Yes that is correct. It does video as well. It's like and old "video camcoder". I use this method and it works great. However you have to make sure that the plug is wired correctly or 1. the colors of the plugs won't match..no big deal..as long as you can get sound and video out of it...just plug it into the hole that works...

or it won't work at all....this was my problem...

My first cable did not work at all..no matter what...so I found a cable that was wired correctly...and apple ipod (video) cable :P works great and the colors match too!

When using a CRT you want to make sure that you have a "newer" model of TV..
older CRTs will work..however the rasp pi is too "intense" for the TV tube and it WILL burn out slowly over time.

I saw a guy complain that the hdmi to vga cable he bought was broken because he couldn't get the cable to produce sound...kids these days and one cable for everything! what ever happened to needing five cables for anything? LOL

oh and I read an article that this guy found a "hack" for his T.V. to get free legal TV...he used and antenna...he had no idea he could do that...I feel so old...

People want things easy...but then complain that life is boring...

@anthonyp555 Ahh ,,gotcha..I always use RCA cables for audio..component for video..they make all kinds of cables nowadays..as chipsnblips mentioned a hat for the pi which is an awesome alternative.. but then you sacrifice a nice case for the pi and fitting the unit in a not so asthetic looking case. Just my two cents.. :-)

@chipsnblip retrotink is a good option but already having a vga connection, a vga to component cable is a much cheaper alternative.

@anthonyp555 you can probably buy a converter box and it will work. I have an hdmi to vga adapter and bought a vga to component adapter cable and it did not actually convert to component as it stated. There was no sync in the green connector so it was just a screen full of scrolling blocks of pink and blue
