      Updates!

      I have gotten somewhat of a picture to have display (IGNORE THE MESS 🤣)

      https://i.imgur.com/uCDczXZ.jpeg

      This was achieved using the following modelines in the config.txt

      hdmi_ignore_edid=0xa5000080 config_hdmi_boost=4 hdmi_group=2 hdmi_mode=87 hdmi_force_mode=1 hdmi_timings=1024 0 48 104 152 768 0 3 4 23 0 0 0 60 0 88509090 1

      It's still obviously very distorted but what is odd that the pixel clock I'm using, 88.5MHz was the only way to get some semblance of an image. However according to the manual for my display it should be a pixel clock of 64MHz for 1024x768 60hz (resolution I'm using rn) and a pixel clock of 108.18MHz for 1280x1024 60hz

      Any reason why the pixel clock is so off? Is my code still wrong? Ultimately I think this will boil down into me opening up the CRT and messing with the sync pots but I'd like to avoid that if possible.

      Any further guidance or help is greatly appreciated 😄.

      @mitu
      Thanks for the reply!
      I do have a normal TV, the problem is that the HDMI cables I've ordered along with the pi 4 don't work. I'll have to order new ones to test at a later date.
      The reason I just kept working on with this screen was that I wanted to build a small (4:3) bar top arcade with it.
      Now, knowing that this screen won't work for this, I'll have to research for a suitable replacement as well.
      Thanks for the help :)

      It depends on what resolutions are supported by your VGA monitor/TV. Look in the video options available and set your resolution accordingly - https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/configuration/config-txt/video.md.

      But HDMI/VGA needs a signal converter/adapter (for digital to analog signal), a 'simple' cable is not going to output anything.

      @KN4THX Thanks to you, too. Most (all?) Linux graphical desktop environments can output their screen on multiple outputs with different resolutions. With the oldest and (still) most common X.org display server, this can be done in shell scripts by the xrandr tool*. But Retropie comes without X.org or similar display server, and I also remember reading somewhere in this forum that the Pi 3b's hardware can't output different pictures at the same time (e.g. via hdmi and composite).

      * edit: I don't know if tvservice can do anything similar on the Pi.

      In addition to these obstacles and unknowns, I would prefer an external solution to free the Pi from any additional cpu or gpu stress, and (with less priority) to be future-proof from significant changes in the hard- and software.

      That said, if there is a software solution for cloning the output with different resolutions without slowing the Pi down significantly, I would be happy to try it. :)

      Why not just use a DVI cable. I use this all of the time for old 4:3 monitors

      Ok, so after I wanted play some games now, I realized the bottom part of the lr-snes9x games are always black. I can't say how many rows, but maybe 10th. The other sides are all on the edge of screen and Emulation Station is shawn correct, lr-nestopia too. Is there a setting I miss? The strange thing is, in RetroArch menu the whole screen is used. The emulator makes the image of game smaller and shows a black bottom border only.

      EDIT: Ok so, after quick testing, it happens also in PC Engine, but not the other emulators.

      @anthonyp555 you can probably buy a converter box and it will work. I have an hdmi to vga adapter and bought a vga to component adapter cable and it did not actually convert to component as it stated. There was no sync in the green connector so it was just a screen full of scrolling blocks of pink and blue

      @capeman Thank you.
      I'll just stick with the vga crt set up, I'm more than happy with the results right out of the box (I'll have a play with some settings myself) compared to the lcd with scanline shader effects.

      Much appreciated.

      @dankcushions said in Default HDMI mode can get you an (undetected!) slow performance on Raspberry pi...:

      it must be your tv, then. libretro advanced tests is running at 60 fps, so if your tv is running at 50hz, with v-sync on you would be getting a stutter. anyone with a tv running at 60hz (which retropie does fine for me and most) should not get such an issue.

      I have a Philips BDM4065UC/00 monitor, but that's a bit my point:
      the default setting is 1920*1080 running at 50Hz. so If I don't realise that and change it, I get a poor performance...
