Wifi Shared from a Mac
-
I'm trying to connect the raspberry pi to my shared iMac connection. My Mac is a 2011 model with el Capitan v10.11.6. I have a raspberry pi zero with the newest version of retropie installed. I have a wifi adapter attached to the pi. its and older model Belkin Model F7D1101 v1. My problem is it finds the Mac's shared Wifi but won"t connect to the internet. Is there something I need to do before trying to connect? I have no internet router. I am using my iPhone 6 Plus tethered to the Mac.
Thanks for any advice.

@stargames66 you need to open System Preferences and then SHARING. Turn on "Internet Sharing". In order for it to work, you need to specify the interfaces across which the sharing will occur. For example, if you are getting your internet via iPhone USB connection, then you would share from: iPhone USB to computers using: WiFi.
You basically have a matrix here where you are selecting where your internet connectivity comes from and where computers will be connecting to your mac to use it. Troubleshooting this is a Mac hardware and software problem, not a RetroPie issue, but these instructions should at least point you in the right direction.
An alternative idea you may not have thought of. . . Is your iPhone capable of running as a wifi hotspot? If so, why not connect the Pi directly to the iPhone via Wifi and cut the mac out of the loop?

I've tried both ways. Not sure if it needs a driver or my wifi adapter doesn't work. Got a new adapter coming soon. If that doesn't work then it probably needs a driver.

Can your iPhone be a wireless hotspot? Then you can just use the normal wifi setup.

@hurricanefan Yes i've tried that. It finds the connection but won't allow an internet connection.

I got a micro wireless wifi adapter from eBay and it works fine. Apparently the old one doesn't work anymore. Thanks for all the help.

@stargames66 Glad to hear you got it working, sucks you had to buy a new adapter to do that. But glad its working!

@hurricanefan It was only $3.99 lol. Works great!
