Complete newbie here, but I bought the Raspberry Pi 3 model B and two SNES-like USB controllers from PiHut to go with it.

Now, having installed the latest (4.3) RetroPie to a SD card and booted up the device, I've stuck in very preliminary problem here:

The EmulationStation setup recognizes my SNES-like gamepad, but wants to allocate Left Trigger and Right Trigger buttons to it too. Now, the pad doesn't have more buttons that those that I have already mapped to it, making this impossible. If I try to assign any other button, the setup states that "Already in use".

Thus, I'm stuck at this stage and cannot continue.

    Help?

@derddu To skip a button mapping, just hold and press a button on your controller, I think it's already said in the mapping screen.

if you already have a controller mapped, and you are trying to map a second controller, when you need to skip the buttons you dont have you can press down on the already mapped controller to skip the button, its a lot quicker than holding a button for a few seconds to skip the button.

No, it's not stated on the mapping screen.

You have to hold down an already mapped button, and do so for a couple of seconds. So this is wrong. There is no quicker way.

@treaves Then you might have a different ES version. Doesn't your mapping screen look like this - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Controller-Configuration/ ?
It clearly states here HOLD ANY BUTTON TO SKIP

@treaves no he is correct. If you have a controller or keyboard already setup then you can use that controller or keyboard to press down instead of having to hold down a button to skip. It is a lot faster with that method as long as you have a preset controller or a keyboard hooked up.

@treaves I am not incorrect. You are just ignorant for the time being, you will get there.

I am coming into this thread late, seeing it as a reference.
Setting up a new box for a friend, and his controller picks up much the same.

I am on the current ES (4.4 i think?), and it does not show the message to hold to skip, though it does work.

So it may vary by version.

It does - but just at the beginning, before you start pressing and mapping your input. It's been fixed in the mean time, but it's not yet part of the stable update cycle.
