Can RetroPie recall specific controller mappings for specific systems?
-
Hello all. I am very new to RetroPie and not very technically savvy, so please bear with me.
I did get RetroPie set up and am primarily interested in playing PS1 games. I've got Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 running smoothly, but the XBOX 360 wired controller that I'm using isn't mapped the way a PS1 controller would be mapped, so playing the game is a bit clumsy.
Is there a way to set up RetroPie so that when I open a PS1 game, it automatically changes the controller mapping so that Y is 'triangle', B is 'circle', A is 'x' and X is 'square'? I ask this specifically because its default setting works perfectly for every other system (SNES, NES, etc).
Please explain like I'm 5. Thanks much!

@suburbanbeat I think you can do that by remapping the buttons in Retroarch, which is used to start the emulator for the ROM.
Read the doc page explaining on how you can override the controller input mapping through the RetroArch configuration GUI - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/RetroArch-Configuration/#core-input-remapping. -
Correct.
If you open the RetroArch settings in-game (hot key + ...X?) then go to quick settings, controls, then change then and save core remap file.
I think that should do it. If not, you may need to also change the options to load the core remap files on start.

This did the trick, thanks much! I didn't know that I could call up this menu that you mentioned. Much appreciated.

Ehhhh... actually, I'm only halfway there. I can edit the control mapping without an issue, but it doesn't save and reverts back to the default each time I exit and re-enter the game. This happens even when I select "Save core overrides."
-
@suburbanbeat Which core is it - the PS1 ? What does it say when you save the core override ? It should print a text on the bottom of the screen.
-
@suburbanbeat the doc is clear. After remapping the buttons youbhave to choose Save Core Remap File (or Save Game Remap File).

@meleu I remember having myself a problem when trying to save the core config overrides for PS1 from the retroarch menu - and I've seen similar reports at https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/8527/psx-remaps-failing or https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/8527/psx-remaps-failing - that's why I thing that it might be a permission problem with saving the core specific options for the PS1 core.
