Update Retropie but not Emulationstation

Yes, I am using a pi 3. The current version of Retropie is 4.3.8. I am not sure about the model of my pi. Will that be located somewhere in settings?
Power supply - Canakit raspberry pi micro usb power supply that came with raspberry pi kit.
Built from a retropie image from petrockblock. I believe it was originally 4.1. It was downloaded about a year ago and has not been updated until updated yesterday to 4.3.8.
USB devices connected: I-Pac 2 and a keyboard -
@mathrocks Try uninstalling ES and the re-installing from core packages.

Thanks. I removed it within the setup program and reinstalled from binary. It did not reinstall emulationstation because it would not go to emulationstation upon reboot.
Errors received - could not install packages: libvlc-dev libvlccore-dev vlc
I then did a basic install, which indicated it would install packages from core and main and do a basic retro pie install. However, emulationstation still is not marked (installed) next to it when I manage core packages. However, retroarch, retropiemenu, and runcommand, still say (installed) next to them. I then tried updating all gold packages from binary. And then tried updating them from source. Emulationstation still shows as not installed.
For some reason emulationstation is not installing. Which could explain why it was never updating previously either.

@mathrocks Have you run an OS upgrade ? Try running - before ES update:
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -
How do you do that? Is that the same as “updating” within the retropie setup script?

@mathrocks You can do this from the update script (Update all packages), choose 'Yes' when it asks about updating the OS underlying packages.
The commands I mentioned can be run this from the command line. If you have a keyboard, just exit Emulationstation (F4 or through the menu) and then execute them. You can also run the commands through a command line via SSH. -
Sorry, I see you posted the commands. I just entered those two prompts and updated. I received well over a page of failed updates after the second prompt. I still tried reinstalling emulationstation and receive the same errors as as previously.

That's probably the reason why updating ES doesn't work, since the dependencies are not properly downloaded and installed. Can you use SSH to run the commands and them paste the errors on pastebin.com ?
You didn't give any clues about your system - https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first - how did you install you system ?

After performing sudo apt-get update I received W: Failed to fetch http://dl.binary.com/pipplware/fists/Jessie/main/binary/ ./Packages 403 forbidden and the same for ...Jessie/armv7/binary/ .packages

I’m sorry, I may be well in over my head because I don’t know what ssh is. I installed my system about a year ago from downloading retropie off the blog from the retropie site.

That's the URL for the an older Kodi repository, which is now unavailable, hence the errors. Try to reinstall Kodi from the RetroPie setup script and see if these errors go away.

Thank you so much to you and JohnnyKesh! This resolved the issue and I was able to reinstall emulationstation. It installed v2.7.4rp! So it must have been the old Kodi that was installed ? Thank you!

The 'old' Kodi installation added a software repository to your software sources, but since that repository disappeared, it produced errors in your software installation.
Now you can enjoy the new Emulationstation goodies and your updates should be ok. Happy New Year !
