RetroPie not recognizing 8bitdo while wired

So I reset all controller configs, and at last... it still doesn’t work!
I’m thinking of just buying a new controller at this point. This one seems helpless. -
@thepuffpuff30 Have you updated any of the firmware? That may help, but if they’re working with Bluetooth is there a reason you want them to work wired?

@thepuffpuff30 From reading the manual for sfx/sf30 this is what i found.
After turning on the controller with start then plug in the usb cable.

@fruitybit there is no firmware update for the 8bitdo Zero. I looked already.
I’d like this controller to work wired for simplicity. One I know it works wired, I could just hard wire the thing to the Pi. I’m making a portable handheld. -
@thepuffpuff30 Fair enough, I hadn’t checked if yours had options. And makes sense for a portable too, I got some of the cheap usb controllers from PiHut for that one, but they’re not quite as nice as the 8bitdo’s.

@fruitybit I would just get another controller at this point, but the issue is, nothing else fits.
My SF30 started working all of a sudden, and I would LOVE to use that, but the circuit board is too big to fit in the case. -
@thepuffpuff30 I would love so much for this controller to work, but I’ve pretty much given up hope. Is there any easy options for creating my own? I don’t know much about electronics.

The Zeros worked fine in 2016 but indeed newer builds of RetroPie don't seem to support them anymore. Not sure what causes this. I can't help trying out cause I sold my Zeros for that reason (wired seemed dead on the Pi in 2017) plus they were WAY too small for my long thin fingers.

@matchaman Actually, since the Zero would be so perfect for my build, do you think it would be a good idea to just downgrade to an older version of RetroPi?

Experimenting until you find what version/setup worked will actually help the community locate what changed and fix what causes this issue. Since it was once supported and now it isn't without notice, I consider this a bug.

@matchaman I completely wiped my MicroSD card and installed v3.7, and it still isn’t working. This is killing me!

@thepuffpuff30 I tried versions, 3.7, 3.8.1, and 4.1, and the controller still doesn't seem to be configurable on any of them. That's really interesting to me, since @matchaman said that the Zeros used to work in older versions.
In version 4.1, I typed "jstest /dev/input/js0", and the controller doesn't seem to show up there at all (even in js1 and higher). I'm guessing this means that it's a problem with the RetroPie version, as I haven't tested this on older versions yet. I'll do so now.
I will keep this thread updated with what I find.

@thepuffpuff30 Seems like I can't get older versions of RetroPie working at all, now. When I try to do a first boot, it says "A start job is running for LSB: Raise network interfaces. ({insert time here} / no limit)" and gets stuck. The time keeps going up, and nothing happens. I have noticed however that when I connect and disconnect other controllers it shows in the terminal, but with the Zero, it doesn't show anything. It seems like the Zero isn't connecting to the Pi at all. No idea why. I'm so lost.
If anybody has an 8bitdo Zero and is willing to help investigate, that would be amazing. For now, I'm calling it a night.

@thepuffpuff30 If I just had the controller connected through Bluetooth and kept it charged through the battery, could I have any problems with the controller disconnecting?
