    As described here and tested myself https://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/questions/65835/extra-16m-memory-on-pi2-pi3 I recommend the default option to be enabled for Raspberry Pi 2 and 3:
    total_mem=1023
    This gives extra 15MB ram or gpu ram. There is some technical explanation there, which I don't fully understand why the last 16MB is not seen by the Raspberry Pi. Normally 1024 would be used here, but this makes it unstable for some people. As i understand, there is no tradoff for this, besides some are reporting crashes if 1024 used, but 1023 makes it stable.

      @thelostsoul I don't want to change a default that even has a small possibility of issues. There is nothing in RetroPie that would benefit from this.

        I won't say that there is nothing it could benefit. People are changing the gpu_mem, because there are benefits. But I understand that there is some risk and respect it. Whoever want that 15MB can add itself right.

            That applies only to a certain kernel version which I don't remember exactly, but I know for sure that the kernel versions on Raspbian Stretch from the beginning doesn't need it anymore, it "sees" all the available memory. You can easily check that for example with free -m and adding the gpu_mem you have configured to that.
