I've tried installing retropie 4.4 on several computers and networks and it gets no more than halfway through before crashing and saying "network error". Any ideas as to why?

        halfway through

Halfway through what ? Booting, or writing the image ? The RetroPie image does not work on 'computers', should be installed on a Raspberry PI.

@mitu just installing it from the "download" page. tried it on a computer and a pi. it will start installing like normal at the bottom of the page but it will hit a certain point and just stop downloading from there. the counter disappears and everything.

@evanct4 I think we have different ideas of what 'installing' means - you're just downloading a file, you don't actually install anything somewhere. The 'disappearance' might actually mean the file is downloaded and you could find it wherever you chose to save it on your system.

@mitu yeah my bad. i mean downloading. when i found the file in my downloads folder it says "unconfirmed 906238.download" and that the file size is only 70mb instead of the 685 it should be. the farthest it has gotten out of the several tries i've done is about 300mb

@mitu it also keeps on saying that it failed due to network error but i have tried it on 3 different networks. is there a possibility it could be a host network issue?

@evanct4 People report from time to time problems downloading, I guess your ISP has some problems with RP download location. Try using the torrent option (thanks to @PetroRie) - https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/4400/torrent-download-retropie

I never knew that so many people would be interested in a torrent. I really want the mods to pin that topic so everyone can find the link easily.
