I am having trouble with my Raspberry Pi. I have tried multiple different SD cards, multiple different cable lengths and power supplies. I even thought it was the Raspberry Pi itself and bought a new one. Then I tried to see if it would run any operating system so I ran the newest version of Raspbian on it. It did, in fact, boot up. So, if any of you more Raspberry Pi savvy people can help me out it would be much appreciated.

@stativegecko I assume you're trying to install RetroPie on a SD card to use with a Raspberry PI. Assuming the power and vide cables are ok, what image are you using and how are you writing it ?
The RPI has 2 leds that blink during the boot process, if you have errors during the boot then you can if there's a SD/OS error by looking at the LEDS - https://elinux.org/R-Pi_Troubleshooting.
Also, please give more details about your setup, as asked in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first

@stativegecko raspberry pi3b+ is not compatible with that version of retropie. Please download the latest version 4.4 here:

@stativegecko what program are you using to write the retropie image to your SD card? Can you describe step by step your process?

@quicksilver Sure! I took the SD card out of the Raspberry Pi. Then, I put the SD card in my computer. Windows would then say "would you like to reformat it?" and I would click yes. After that, I used Win32 Disk Imager I chose the new file that you suggested and clicked write. Then, I waited for it to finish writing and used the "Eject Card" button on Windows to make sure I wouldn't corrupt it. Then I put it back into the Raspberry Pi and plugged the Raspberry Pi back in and crossed my fingers.

@stativegecko you are unzipping the retropie image before writing it with win32disk imager correct?

@quicksilver I might be I am unsure, as silly as that sounds. How would I do that?

@stativegecko so the retropie image needs to be uncompressed/extracted using a program like WinZip, WinRAR or 7zip. 7zip is free so probably start there if you don't already have one. Once you have extracted it, then take that file and write it to your SD card using win32disk imager.

@quicksilver Could you leave a link for 7zip I just did a Google Search for it and there are many programs called 7zip apparently.

You can also use etcher and write the image to your SDCARD without extracting it. If you use win32diskimager you have to extract the file to your harddrive then use win32diskimager to write to your SDCARD. I'm curious to know if after your initial setup that you shutdown completely is that you are able to boot still.

@stativegecko just extract it to your hard drive. Then write the extracted file to your SD card using win32disk imager.

@quicksilver I have a signal now but it looks like a terminal. I thought it was to start the setup of the controller. Did I do something wrong?

@stativegecko Follow the documentation - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/First-Installation/ - you can't go wrong with that.
