      What is the MAME ROW?

MAME ROW stands for MAME Random Of the Week. We randomly select an arcade game from the 0.78 MAME Reference Set to play on the week. The idea is to play games we've never played before, interact with other forum members, post hi-scores, share game strategies, fun facts, and (the most important) HAVE FUN!

      Notes:

      1. We usually post hi-scores screenshots after playing with only one credit. If you used more than one credit, please mention it on your post.

      2. There's no need to use RetroPie to join the MAME ROW! You can play it on any platform you want.

      3. Feel free to post your hi-score (or any content about the game) anytime you want on the previous rounds topics (link below).

Every Monday we create a topic at the "General Discussion and Gaming > MAME Random Of the Week" forum section with the 3 random games to be voted. And on Wednesday we check the result.

These "rules" are constantly being improved!

It's a tricky decision this week!

I'm not actually sure as I write this which one I'm going to vote for.

Dyger is a competent, if uninspiring vertical shooter. Appearing five years after the mighty 1942 we could hope for some new innovations, but apart from the fact we have both air and ground targets ( with guns and bombs to deal with each) there's not really anything ground breaking. Both the guns and bombs are unlimited, so the effect of this feature is simply that you press two fire buttons repeatedly instead of one. It's not a bullet-hell shooter like some later entries into this genre, and plays well, but it's ultimately an unmemorable experience.

Peggle is an unusual one, I didn't think I'd like it at first, as it seemed more like a puzzle game, but it grew on me. I like the mechanic that the controls both rotate the pegs and move the pots along the bottom of the screen. There's sort of two levels of play, the first as you attempt to hit all the pegs, and then a second as you try to save your character from the slime pot and bounce it back into play on the peg board. Refreshingly unusual.

J.J.Squawkers - I'd never heard of this one, and from the preview video expected it to be a Ghosts and Goblins clone. I guess it is, kind of, but it cranks the humour up to 11, and thankfully cranks the difficulty of Ghosts and Goblins down a notch.
I thought it was funny to be controlling a green bird wearing shorts at first, but when he started firing 'slinky's with running shoes about, I was hooked. A beautiful looking game which is a lot of fun.

Having considered the above, I've decided this week my vote goes to.....

Wow, 'J. J. Squawkers' on MAME ROW! I'm really glad this won. You'll almost always find it on a list of MAME hidden gems. Arcade-specific platformers have never been my favorite, but this one really is a lot of fun.

Every week I have a new reason to be late. This weekend I installed new OS version (on my pc). So hopefully I can contest you today. The game looks interesting.

                      Well done @cyperghost !

Pretty odd game this, but good fun.

I couldn't manage to get a high score by the deadline but had a few games tonight an managed to get 34260. Alas too late for the competition!

It's never too late for Squakers to do his thing ;)

Actually, I've always assumed the competition lasted all week until another game gets voted in. Great score regardless.
