Arcade edition Donkey Kong Jr. The problem that the BGM which is so goes off

donkey kong jr. sample set missing ??
MAME needs the correct sample set depending on what version of MAME. Which one are you using for the arcade emulator. MAMe is VERY specific about what ROM set AND what sample set. It looks like you might be missing the sampel set
Try playing donkey kong ... if you get no background noises then you are missing the sample sets
Assuming you are using the default MAME emulator, which should be MAME2003, this use MAME 0.37b5 which is ancient in MAME terms (MAME v0.41 July 2000)
Download ALL these here :
http://samples.mameworld.info/Older Samples.htm
and put them here (I use OSMC with RetroPie installed via RetroSMC so I just use OSMC instead of the 'pi' location)
/home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS/mame2003/samples/
This might give you a few tips and help as well

@barbudreadmon I guess you can sympathize then ;)
-
@steptoe anything past mame2003 on the pi dont need sample sets any more. They did away with those on like mame .116 or somewhere around there
-
@edmaul69 Thank you very much! If I installed MAME 2016 and made them work with that, a problem was corrected! It seems to be a problem of MAME2010, MAME2003 and FBA!

@mitu I'm sorry,

As others have explained, certain emulators need the samples available for sounds to work. It's not a problem per se with the emulator.
-
@mitu with lr-mame2010 it doesnt need the samples. Both donkey kong and donkey kong jr have problems in lr-mame2010 but work fine with any romset after .116 in lr-mame2016.

mame2010/0.139 does still use samples, although not for the Donkey Kong games I believe.

It may be worth noting that both games are also fully functional in AdvanceMAME. Seeing as how these issues didn't exist in MAME 0.78 or 0.139, I guess they stem from the libretro core conversions, similar to the Midway MCR issues that were recently ironed out.
-
@markwkidd yeah sorry to not state that i was referring to the donkey kong games. Several of the nintendo games dont use the samples anymore.

Ah, I didn't catch the fact that the games work in the original MAME versions. If that's true for 0.78 then there I guess an issue post would be appropriate in the mame2003-plus repo. :toot toot: lol
-
@mediamogul yeah something made lr-mame2010 go wrong. It no longer has frameskip and a lot of previously working games like the golden tees and donkey kong lock up now.

You guys don't ever get to rest do you? Are you planning on starting an issue, or would you like me to?

Do you remember any kind of rough time frame as to when this might have happened?
-
@mediamogul as soon as i went to 4.4 with the new retroarch. Acts the same when i stuck lr-mame2010 from jessie on 4.4. Thats at least when I noticed. I dont have jessie anymore to test.

I'm at the beginning of a multiday road trip. If you're willing to create the issue then I would be grateful :) This thread caught my attention because there was this one time when I unknowingly screwed up sample support in mame2003 and I wanted to make sure history was not repeatin.

Not a problem. It's late here now, but I'll write it up in the morning.
-
I'm taking for granted that I fully understand this situation. Can you confirm that both games lock up in lr-mame2003 and lr-mame2010? Also, do the audio issues exist in both cores for both games?

I stumbled across a RetroPie arcade install, looking for similar or good starting point before I sat down and tried it myself, that has been done to include ONLY working ROMS from MAME, FBA and NEOGEO. Its a full install, ready to copy over and using MAME2010. You have to compile thsi from the optional menu and takes forever to compile. So far, every game I've tried has worked includings ones that wouldn't with my previous attempts trying to et MAMe ROMs to work and guessing which ones work or are non-working clones
Its a 12.5GB total set, but it solved my headaches of arcade ROMs and what does or doesn't work in one go
Search for
[deleted]
, thats all I'm suggestingThis is the info from the links :
*Final version. All roms and all media.
Here is my all inclusive arcade set. It combines mame2010, mame2003, and fbalpha in the arcade folder with best version of each game picked out.
No clones, (except a couple I put in), no mahjong, no mature, no quiz, only trackball, racing, and light gun games that can be controller with a controller or joystick. 2 player and 4 player versions where available.
Neogeo is together with the mame stuff. All goes in the arcade folder.*
I'm not direct linking, just suggesting a search name so I'm guessing its allowed ??
