You can indeed get in to the TAB screen when using the Arcade folder? Would you be able to verify what MAME version you're running. When you launch the game there will be a blue rectangular splashscreen for a few seconds where you are able to see the emulator name that is running.

Just to verify what version of RetroPie are you using 3.8.1 or the new 4.0 beta build? It seems like it should not work as the same emulator is running regardless of the folder (Arcade or mame-mame4all) but you never know.

oh no, i mean when i have the roms in the lr-imame4all or advancemame folders, the tab key works, when i put the roms in the arcade folder, the tab key doesnt work.

only mame2003 tab will work out of the arcade folder for me.

Thanks, well that would be interesting too. :) The lr-imame4all folder is actually /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-mame4all (mame4all-pi and lr-imame4all share the same folder) so when you have ROMs in that folder and launch a game is the emulator that flashes on the blue splashscreen say mame4all or lr-imame4all?

I was testing 4.0-beta 2 and it prompts for a default emulator on the first game boot from the Arcade folder. I tried lr-imame4all and TAB did not work. It works fine in mame4all-pi, lr-mame2003 & of course AdvMAME.

only reason i kind of figured it was the arcade folder that was disabling tab, is because i was desperately trying to get the spider-man videogame arcade game to work, and it wouldnt load, from any mame emulator

Ok, here's what i did, i put in my backup sd card, before i updated the retropie script.. and i recorded a video its version 3.8.1 on the backup card. games in the mame folders will allow tab to be pressed, but it seems since, arcade folder roms, use retroarch, tab is disabled in favor of the retroarch system

                      here is the video

Ok, it looks like it doesn't work as we had originally thought. Thanks for the video though. Actually you can pick any MAME emulator when they are in the Arcade folder. Start a game and press a key like the space bar immediately. It will bring up a menu. Select option 1 and you can use any of those emulators. The caveat being it has to be a ROM for the emulator you choose. If the lion's share of the ROMs are of one type you can choose a default emulator and then do a per ROM basis for the rest which is option 2 I believe. That way you can consolidate all your MAME ROMs in to one folder, one location in Emulationstation for all MAME based games.

@Riverstorm i've tried that, with the roms in the arcade folder, setting them to different emulators, via the option menu. but the tab wont work for me that way either. for some reason, they need to be in the specific mame rom folder for tab to work. im not sure if its a directory issue, or a script issue. but for me, tab only works when the roms are in the mame rom folders.. never in the arcade folder

edit: it seems to be, because the arcade folder is using retroarch, and retroarch is overiding all settings from all the mame emulators.

edit 2: tested again, after transferring configs from retropie 3.8.1 to the updated sd card, tab now works from the arcade folder, except when choosing lr-mame4all as the emulator

no problem getting tab to work in lr-Mame2003 and mame4all-pi via arcade folder here. there's no difference in the folders unless in arcade you've unbound tab via the... tab menu :)

LOL, i put myself into a new issue.. argh. Now, the d-pad, which i have working as hatswitches, wont work in mame inputs. all the other buttons work, is there something i have to do, to enable hatswitches?

Same here Dank, it works fine in lr-mame2003, mame4all-pi & AdvMAME. I was just trying to determine if it was broken in lr-imame4all which it looks like it is. I opened a ticket like you said in hopes it might get fixed someday. :)

So I'm in a similar boat to others. I am predominantly running lr-mame2003 and have rooms in both the arcade and mame folder. Tab won't work for any of them. Odd thing is it worked yesterday, but last night I was setting up some games, went to hit tab and it was non existent. Tried a fresh install of retropie today and still nothing. No idea why it won't work.

@SnipedintheHead that's the configuration file. I suspect you're not running mame2003 in these instances.
