PSX eboot Disc Swap
-
Hi all,
I'm just wondering how to swap discs. I want to play Resident Evil 2. For those that don't know on RE2 you play through 2 scenarios as 2 characters to start a Scenario with Clare you need to start up on Disc 2.
So I boot the game and go into the Disc Control options eject the disc then switch to disc 2 and 'un-eject' the disc. If I go back to the Game it will just be a black Screen if I hit restart it says 'Insert PlayStation CD-ROM. I have tried this on a few Multi disc games and got the same result.
What should I be doing? The games are rips from PAL discs (Yes I'm probably the only person that ripped their own legitimately own games😂)

Did my own games thankyouverymuch and made them PSP eboots. My multidisc games are in one file. Usually just a matter of going into RetroArch and using the command to swap.

That's what I described above, I have made the multidisc eboots too. The problem with RE2 is there are no disc swap screens. If you want to play 'Claire' you have to start on disc 2 it's not like you get to a part of of disc one and it's says insert disc two.
-
I am curious myself on this one..I have found for now the solution is to not combine them into one eboot. But PLEASE let me know if i am missing something :D
-
This is the same for Gran Turismo 2 another game with 2 discs and no disc swap screen.

As for GT2 I have a Simulation Disc and an Arcade Disc. You don't need to swap them. Just boot one or the other depending on what you want to play.
-
@classicgmr so you mean..swap the disc first and then restart it?
or you mean don't combine them into one pbp? <-- I'm guessing this one

I ran into this issue as well..which is why I keep multi disc games, where you play each disc independently, as seperate bin files. (For example Command & conquer.) I did this too for Resi 2, but recently remembered about the B scenarios. So I think for now the only way is to use 2 bin files and rename your save file so it works with the other disc.
Edit: I just checked the issue again with a Resi 2 eboot and it's really odd: Sometimes it resets just fine after using disk control and sometimes it asks you to insert a Playstation cd-rom. Without changing anything I succesfully changed disc's (resetting) from 1 to 2, to 1 again.. the third time it took me to the menu where it asks for a cd-rom.

No... they are 2 separate, BOOTABLE discs. The Simulation Mode and Arcade Mode discs are independent of each other. You want to play GT2 Arcade? Start that disc. Want to play the Simulation Mode and get licenses, cars and such? Then start that disc.
In Emulation Station I have them showing as separate games.

Never actually tried RE2 but since I was stupid enough to reply the way I did - and just assumed an eboot would fix everything - I have spent about an hour searching online about this particular game. Apparently this is something - even on these forums (search "Claire") - people have an issue with. I couldn't come up with a good solution that anyone else has found.
-
@classicgmr I have RE2 in a multi-disc eboot format, and it's doable. To play the second disc, load the game as normal, go into RetroArch, swap the virtual discs, and then do a software reset. I typically hop into RetroArch as soon as the gore warning appears on screen.
-
@eldrethor Yeah I figured you could do that as well..but again most of the time I get the "please insert a Playstation game disc" instead shrugs
BTW..same topic but different question....
From what i understand the PSP can only read up to a two gigabyte file?
but PSX RE-Armed (core) would not have that limitation I am assuming?
(Myst in a combined PBP is HUGE of course)

I am still struggling with this.
Separate ISOs isn't an Ideal solution as you need the same Save file between them. I.e. with GT2 you Unlock stuff on one disc to benefit the other. On RE2 you need the same save to complete the scenario on the other disc.
Renaming the save file is a solution all be it a shit one as you have to SSH in everytime I want something cleaner.
I read about Creating a symbolic link as the second save so it just points to the first.
I tried this but got an error. Any ideas?
-
This is the Error
pi@retropie:~/RetroPie/roms/psx $ sudo ln -s "ResidentEvil2Leon.srm" "Resident
Evil2Claire.srm"
ln: failed to create symbolic link ‘Resident Evil2Claire.srm’: Operation not permitted -
@chris-red Either you don't have permissions to write on that folder (unlikely) or the FS doesn't support it. Are your ROMs on an USB drive ? If a symlink won't work, just copy the file.
-
Yes the roms are on A USB, Copying the file is a pain as I will have to do it everytime there is a disc swap.
-
@chris-red So why don't you create a
.m3u
file ( https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Playstation-1/#m3u-playlist-for-multi-disc-games) for the game and then the save will have the same name every time ? -
Because I can't swap discs, I already had them as an eboot. Neither game has a Disc swap screen, swapping discs mid game gives me an error.
-
It is al little late but her is the solution (it is working for me ^^)
Starting game from CD2, CD3, etc.
-Start your game, open Retroarch menu and go to Quick Menu > Disk Control.
-Click once on Disk Cycle Tray Status, select the correct disc in Disk Index and click once again on Disk Cycle Tray Status.
-Go back to Quick Menu, click Resume, re-open Retroarch menu and click Restart.
-If you don't click Resume before Restart the CD will not load for some reason:
-OR, you can turn OFF the Pause when menu is actived OFF in Settings > User Interface, this way you don't need to press Resume before pressing Restart!
-
@Schwette I tried your suggestion with Oddworld Abe's exoddus but no luck...loading the second disc and restarting still brings me to the purple 'no disc menu'. I'm on retropie 4.3.5 and retroarch 1.6.7. The game is in bin format and I use an m3u playlist.
-
-Start game
-swap disk and go in game for a few seconds
-then restartDid you try exactly like this ?
edit: I'm on RetroPie is v4.4
