I bought a picade from pimoroni and built it, all is well but two issues, I will list them in order of importance to me:-

1: Mameforall (the main reason I wanted the picade)
For some reason I have a sound delay/lag when playing mame games. it is like 1 to 1.5 seconds out, for example load Asteroids and start the game, press shoot 3 times and you immediately see 3 bullets but the pew-pew-pew sound happens 1-1.5 seconds later ...when the bullets are halfway across the screen.

This is happening to all my mame games (emulation station - mameforall) but if I switch to say an Atari 2600 game or a Gameboy game then the sound is perfect. only in mame is there a delay.

I am using a pi 3 model b+ and using the retropie-4.4-rpi2_rpi3.img file. I have tried using this file on another sdcard but it also is the same.

Can someone PLEASE help me this this sound issue, I know 1-1.5 seconds doesn't sound really bad but it totally ruins lots of games.

      now my 2nd problem

2: ZX Spectrum games, no matter which ZX Spectrum game I try to load or what format its in or whether it's zipped or not. The instant the game loads, the spectrum emulator crashes and just shows the Spectrum boot screen ((c) Sinclair Research 1982) my games do work fine on my PC emulator. is there a way to get them working on the pi too?

Thank you for any help you give me, problem 1 is my main issue as I bought the picade to mainly play arcade classics from the 80's.

@Stevezx81 I would personally start by trying lr-mame2003 as Mame4all is 18 years old. Get the 0.78 romset and try again. You will have no issues. Mame4all is great on earlier Pi iterations. That said, I have not experienced the lag you describe when using Mame4all in the past. This could be a HDMI issue? With regards to the ZX, which emulator are you using? Have you followed the guide? I use lr-fuse with no issues. Games launch directly from emulationstation.

Thank you for that, I have tried using lr-mame2003 but my romset is not compatible so very few games work. I think it's impossible to get romsets nowadays so that's sadly not an option.

          but thanks for the help!

Personally speaking I prefer the mame4all set. Yeah it's old but so am I lol, and I've had much more success getting the games I want to play working on the Pi with the older set than the 2003 set. Far too many not working in 0.78. Just imho.

For the OP I'd definitely look at the TV settings before tinkering with Retropie. Any kind of game settings on the telly you've enabled? I usually switch off anything that sets itself to "auto" in my TV settings too. Loads of different hidden settings can cause lag.

Thanks but it's outputting to a small 8in screen that comes with the kit.
(other emulators have no sound delay, only mameforall)
