Discs of Tron - environmental, speech, and parent/child ROMS

@markwkidd I love it! LOL
What an amazing group of people, an amazing resource to someone just jumping in. The help is appreciated.

I generally use advmame 3.8 for everything now for me it works great (snapshots, volume control from hotkeys). I only had a couple games with some graphic issues that made me use mame2003 but since updating from 1.4 to 3.8 those issues are gone. I loaded up discs of tron (with advmame) and while it plays ok, the sound is a little jacked and so is the speech when using the enviro version. I haven't tried or installed mame2003-plus yet.

I've made some adjustments to my
advmame.rc
file that seem to eliminate most audio issues. If you're interested, try setting:sound_latency 0.15 sound_samplerate 22050 sync_resample internal

@mediamogul awesome man that worked, million times better. I just did tron only not sure if this would impact any other games. Oddly with dotrone my player1 start button doesn't work (1). If I try and remap it the key press doesn't even get recognized. Works fine in dotron and dotrona though.
dotrone/sound_latency 0.15 dotrone/sound_samplerate 22050 dotrone/sync_resample internal

@stoney66 so... you’re having the same issue I have?
-
bally games work on mame2003 and 2003 plus i fixed both. Run mame2003+ with logging to make sure your using the right rom check for errors mame2003 isint so verbose in all rom situation scenarios
-
@brimys yep just noticed your post had the same issue with P1 start, didn't catch that earlier. Thats a good thing so it's not just you :) Using P2 start works. I tried remapping P1 start to another key but the game doesn't recognize it either (the key bind maps just the game does not accept it)
So when you only insert 2 coins for 1 game you can't start a P1 game. If I use 4 coins then I can start using P1 or P2 start, however its a 2 player game either way.
Note: I am using advmame 3.8 and not mame2003/2003+

It might help to compare your config files between each other. As I happen to not be affected by this, I'll post the contents of mine as well.

i think this can have something to do with the game mirroring it was originally on bounce off a mirror

@mediamogul Are you running DOTRONE in mame2003-plus? Maybe this is just an advmame issue...?
-
No, I'm using AdvanceMAME 3.8. The analog control options are a bit more robust there and this is a game that really needs granular control for precision aiming.
-
-
@brimys for P1 start are you using joystick mapping or ipac2/keyboard mapping? I use the mini-pac.
-
@stoney66 I have an ipac2.
-
I have to apologize. I would have bet money that I've played DOTRONE recently, but my last play is listed as being nearly a year ago. I just ran a test game and I too am having this issue. It might need to be reported to the AdvanceMAME project, but there might also be something that can be done at a user level. I plan on looking at it more closely this evening to see. While I'm there, I'll test it against version 3.9 as well.
-
Thanks for taking a look!
-
No problem. I didn't have time tonight, but I went ahead and compiled v3.9 so it would be ready to test.

I can't remember ever having to do this before, but the solution is very easy. Once the game is launched, open up the configuration menu and select 'Dip Switches'. From there, change the cabinet type from 'Upright' to 'Environmental'. You wouldn't necessarily think that this would affect how the coin mech emulation behaves, but once I set this it began to operate as expected.
Edit:
Man, I really love this game. I don't believe I ever saw it in any arcades I visited back in the day. I saw and played plenty of 'TRON' machines, but never this. Apparently it was supposed to be one of the mini games from the first release, but didn't make the deadline. I'm glad it got fleshed out into its own game. The higher levels where the platforms are obscured by walls, shifting height and disappearing are very challenging. -
@mediamogul Nice! Can’t wait to try the fix! How did you ever figure that out?
Love this game. Do you have a push/pull spinner on your setup?
