The Games You Played in 2018

@PokeEngineer I got Uncharted 1 & 2 with a PS3 I bought off of a classmate's dad. Uncharted 3 I got on sale from Kohls. I breezed through the first three games and was heartbroken to realize that the 4th was on a system I didn't have.
I got a ps4 for christmas this year with: Spiderman, Persona 5, Dragon Quest 11, GTA V and Uncharted 4.
The old woodshop teacher in my school is basically Sully from Uncharted (My favorite character BTW)

For me, 2018 ended up being mostly about regaining my skills at the games I was once best at over the years. From completing 'Contra', and 'Goonies II' on one life, to besting the highest level of AI on 'Tetris & Dr. Mario', nothing was more important than reclaiming my hold on playing the infamous shape-shifting sorcerer Shang Tsung in 'Mortal Kombat Trilogy'.
I'm still not back to my original fighting weight yet, but currently I can morph into about 70% of the characters from a jump or blocked position if necessary and seamlessly continue the fight with all of their unique moves, strongest combo chains and basic fatalities. The DOS version has no load times, so my ultimate goal is to be able to morph into any character at a moment's notice and unleash hell. It's a goal I look forward to completing in 2019.

@mediamogul Mortal kombat is lots of fun. :) Last night we fired up Ultimate mortal kombat 3 (arcade) and even when you're both bad it is still fun to mess around with it..figuring out certain moves by yourself.
I was a bit annoyed that Scorpion's signature line after throwing his spear got cut off (instead of Get over here, you just heard Get). Did some googling today and found a community made 1.3 version which fixed it (and lots of other stuff too!) . I love how these old games keep getting improved upon.Ontopic contribution: Played lots of old games this year but I don't recall finishing a single one (excluding fighting games). My goal for 2019 is to start and finish Final fantasy VII (for the third time since 1997).

I know what you mean. Some of the most fun I ever had with "same couch gaming" was with 'Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3'. My friends and I would play it for hours on end, talking smack and blaming any losses on hand cramping. We got to where we'd play the built-in 'Galaga' clone just as often and see who could last the longest. Great game, great times.

@mediamogul For two player matches it is great indeed. I do wish the single player part was more fun though. Even on the easiest difficulty setting, this game gets ridiculously hard after the 3rd match.

Super Mario World (SNES). It’s my facourite platformer and still is the best imo. Was looking forward to the Wii Super Mario (whatever it’s called) but it didn’t feel as fluid and good as SMW. I perfectred the game and found all goals. I used a FAQ only once, the choco island stage where some weird factor decides which goal you reach, I always forget how to do that. I play this game and get all goals over a couple of days about once every second year. It always feels fresh again after having a break. My cab is almost finished so I hope I will be playing som new old games this year. Also looking forward to playing Zelda aLttP, haven’t played that in a few years.

The AI in the home ports is much more forgiving, but the entire MK series has had issues with single player matches. By most schools of thought, good AI in any game should mimic a human player as closely as possible. The 'Street Fighter' series was always more in line with that idea. The Kombat series unfortunately uses predictive response, in that the computer reads and predicts your control input and counters based on that inside information. Seeing as how MKT makes use of the same predictive response found in the arcade games, I've always seen it as a challenge to find attack patterns that aren't easily predictable. I've had a lot of success there and can beat most people I sit down with, as well as the AI, but the approach is riddled with bad habits and wouldn't win any tournaments.

@mediamogul @BobHarris I am absolutely terrible at fighting games, I'm only somewhat passable at Smash, and that's stretching it.

Early 2018 was the year I started with Raspberry Pi and RetroPie. It was the time when I had enough of Overwatch and always looked at those Raspi projects. I already have emulators on pc, but I wanted something more portable and indipendent from my pc, plus I wanted use it on a crt monitor (another plus, I was short on money, so this was welcome option).
Once the project started and the technical side was working, I quickly realized that I don't want to include everything, but a hand crafted and selected games. After extensive research and over time the rules to include of best games got loose a bit. I lost myself in adding more and more generic or hidden gem titles as I learn more and more. That is the reason I did not play so much last year, but was intensively busy with study of older games and systems. So I tried a looot of games, so these will not be included (almost 2000). Nonetheless below is a list of games I played more. My goal for this year is to play more retro games and complete as much as possible.
Pss: I don't know how to avoid the over use of the word "i". Sorry if it reads repetitive.
Psss: An asterix "*" means I beat the game. As you see, there is not much.RetroPie:
This year was my first contact with RetroPie and I love it. I always wanted play Wario Land 3, as I am a huge fan of the second game. World of Illusion has a special place in my heart from my youth and I never played it through before, until last year. F-Zero is also a game I know and never played through, which is a shame. Now I did the first cups and need some training to beat the rest. Wave Race 64 is a game I always come back to it, although I know each stage very well (played it for time attack with friends). I also started playing some mods. Prophets Guile is very short (still not completed yet lol).- Wario Land 3 (gbc)
- Super Mario Land (gb)
- World of Illusion (md) *
- F-Zero (snes)
- Wave Race 64 (n64) *
- Prophet's Guile :: Chrono Trigger mod (snes)
RetroPie - MAMEROW:
These are Mame games (most played on mame2003, besides Mars Matrix, which was played on FBA) are played for highscores and shared them in a sub forum of official RetroPie forum. These titles are where I actually participated and tried to beat the others. Look here: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/category/16/mame-random-of-the-week- Crazy Balloon
- Hotdog Storm
- J.J. Squawkers
- Legend of Hero Tonma
- Mars Matrix
- Parodius Da!
- Tetris Plus 2
PC / Consoles:
As you can see, I am a fan of team shooters (since TF2). I played 2 years long intensively Overwatch and 2018 was the year when I stopped. After that I started with RetroPie btw.. Then I also played Paladins after that, because my younger brother wanted to play with me and I also was interested how it compares to Overwatch. Then I also started with Team Fortress 2 again, to see how well it is today and if it is changed. I must say it holds very well and did not change much. Since years I try to beat GTA 5 once in story mode. One time my console did not work anymore, the other time I sold the game, the other time I had Windows problem and lost my saves. This time I stopped because the submarine level was boring. And then I played Civilization 6 and the first time since Civ 1 on the snes, I was able to win the game with science.- Overwatch
- Paladins
- Team Fortress 2
- Grand Theft Auto 5
- Civilization 6 *
Handheld:
This is the second PokeMon game I played ever. The first time was 1997 when PokeMon Red/Blue came out on the original Game Boy. I wanted see how it is evolved. Also my younger brother is a huge fan of the series (he knows everything, more than Wikipedia) and he want to battle with me. I started playing it when I had problems with my internet connection at home. :D I almost beat the game.- PokeMon Sun (3ds)
Mobile / Smartphone:
I don't play mobile games. There are some good ones and I have a good phone too. Maybe this year.- -x-

They're of course like anything else. You have to enjoy them enough to play them over and over until your reactions become instinctual. When I first learned Kombat, fighting games were all anyone in the world wanted to play, so I got a lot of practice. I really enjoy Smash myself, but I'm not fantastic at it. I especially like how accessible it is. It works well as a button smasher for new players, but there's a lot of nuance involved in getting good. My main in that series has always been Kirby. With his power copying ability, he's like the Shang Tsung of the Smash world.

@lilbud I can recommend you to look at Dragon Ball FigtherZ. Got it last year and will play it this year a little more. I think it is good for beginners, as it have some easy autocombos and easy to execute special moves. And everything you do looks good. :D
-
If you guys got the ps4 and haven't played God of War you are doing yourself a disservice. It isn't like the old games and the technical direction is amazing. I completely agree with it winning Game of the Year on so many publications.
-
@alrdtakn1 It's on my backlog but it will be a while until I get to it. I got GTAV, Persona 5, Dragon Quest 11 and Uncharted 4 to finish first.
-
I finished a couple of visual novels on the Vita - SteinsGate Zero and Psycho Pass, at least that I remember. Still going through Persona 3 Portable.
On the pi, though, as it's certainly where I played the most, the only game I really finished was Cave Story.
Other than that, played a lot of DoDonPachi, Contra, Final Fight and OutRun on MAME as I'm trying to 1CC them and failing miserably at that, Mars Matrix and Giga Wing for fun, Streets of Rage 2 on the Genesis, Castlevania 1 and Rondo of Blood, and took part in quite a few MAME ROWs which helped me try out other games. I have grown quite fond of bullet-hell shmups this past year, and having recently had the pleasure of playing Ikaruga I can imagine that will be a mainstay for 2019. I'll also try out a few more Dreamcast games as my only experience so far had been with games that didn't run well.

Upvoted for Superhot on XBox One. That's the only game I "beat" this year. It's infuriating, addictive and absolutely superb.
I'd list all the games I've been playing this year but I've played so many.....most of which for less than an hour.
I have been mostly playing Forza Horizon 3 and Forza Horizon 4.
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
