Are there any basic "hacks" that everyone using Retropie (on a Pi 3) ought to do?

I've recently being playing a lot of THPS4 on my Retropie machine and only from my brother casually mentioning it in conversation, I didn't know about the double resolution hack. Since doing it, my PS1 games look amazing!

Are there any other simple hacks like this that I (and others) may have completely overlooked in the past? Serves me right for not really reading the wiki and just diving straight in, I guess.

For what it's worth I have roms for most of the available systems but have been quite picking in selecting mostly multiplayer/party games, with the odd single player one thrown in. eg Metal Gear Solid looks a load better since doubling the resolution!

For starters, using Shaders to get a better (or worse) picture, or using bezels to decorate your display area.

@Baz not sure if this is exactly what you are asking for, but 2 years ago @Floob started a thread named What tweaks do you make to your RetroPie setup?

Probably many of those tweaks are already part of the official retropie_setup script, but maybe you can find good tips there.

And here is my contribution on that topic.

You could also look into the new(ish) run ahead feature. It helps to eliminate input lag and from what I understand works very well on early system emulators. https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/17438/new-emulation-method-to-eliminate-input-lag
