Emulationstation's internal scraper - which uses thegamesdb site - is not working at the moment.
The scraping site has shutdown the legacy API (3 Jan 2018) used by Emulationstation, so scraping is not going to work with the current version.
While a solution is found, you can use the other scrapers included in the RetroPie installation - Lars Muldjord's Skyscraper or Steven Selph's scraper - to scrape your games.

    Update: Feb 2019 13

A new Emulationstation version has been released, featuring an updated scraper - including support for both TheGamesDB (gratiously contributed by @acrummyidea) and ScreenScraper sites. The new version, which includes the updates, is currently 2.8.x and features also other fixes and additions.
You can update to this version using the normal RetroPie-Setup update process.

If you're still running Raspbian Jessie (from a RetroPie image older than 4.4), then you'll have to install from source the new version. Due to a missing dependency, you'll have to manually install the rapidjson-dev package from Debian Backports before attempting to update from source.

    wget http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/r/rapidjson/rapidjson-dev_1.1.0+dfsg2-3~bpo9+1_all.deb
    sudo dpkg -i rapidjson-dev_1.1.0+dfsg2-3~bpo9+1_all.deb

I can't scrape with any method. One of the scrapers deleted my metadata and images. 😭😭😭
