@meleu Thats the thing, my overlays are not meant for one system in particular. They were meant for any game on any system. How would I write the info.txt for those?

@lilbud oh... rpie-art can't deal with this situation... Maybe you can, at least, create an info.txt for the Secret of Mana overlay. I believe people only use it when playing on that game on SNES.

@lilbud yeah, but you also need to provide the ROM configs. Look what @UDb23 made for Mega Man here: https://github.com/UDb23/rpie-ovl/tree/master/nes/Mega Man

@meleu Now it should be good: https://github.com/lilbud/RetroPie-Overlays/tree/master/Secret of Mana

But in all seriousness, there has to be a way to add overlays that aren't specific for any one game.

There is such way. But it has to be specific to a system.

@lilbud: that's because actual game area is different for each system and therefore the overlays must be specific to fit correctly.

So I installed this. It worked for some ROMs that were on the list. When I went into Retroarch and manually set the cfg, it worked for others. I'm now in the process of manually moving all the art into /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/arcade/images/overlays/ (so it's with all the other art and video previews.) This is working great...however, when I go to set the .cfg location, it always defaults to "/home/pi/.config/retroarch/overlay". Is there a way to change the default directory to "/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/arcade/images/overlays/"?

                    [EDIT]
                    Ok, two problems:

                    1. Games that were on the rpie-art install list don't respond to a keypress for the launching.png/runcommand window

                    2. Games that weren't on the install list, to which I've manually added art, aren't showing the overlay. And I don't know how to install the launching art.

@Superman550 where do you place the images ?
what exact message are you getting ?

The image must be placed at $HOME/RetroPie/roms/SYSTEM_NAME/images/ and named as RomName-launching.png (or .jpg), where RomName must be the exact name of the ROM minus the trailing extension.

@UDb23 thanks for your help i should have followed the first rule of trouble shooting do the simplest thing first it was as simple as renaming the roms to the correct names

How do I remove ripe-art from my system?

It is installed to my RetroPie menu - I would like to completely remove it and anything it installed

                                    @aaciii My suggestion:

                                    1. Run the rpie-art script, choose the last option Uninstall art and then uninstall the files you have installed.

                                    2. After that, you can probably achieve something near to what you want with the commands below. But first that good'old warning PERFORM THESE COMMANDS AT YOUR OWN RISK:

                                    # go to the RetroPie files directory
                                    cd ~/RetroPie/

                                    # deletie the files from the art repositories
                                    rm -rf art-repositories

                                    # remove rpie-art from your RetroPie menu
                                    xmlstarlet ed -L -d '/gameList/game[path="./rpie-art.sh"]' retropiemenu/gamelist.xml

                                    # delete the script and the art-repo list
                                    rm retropiemenu/rpie-art*

@meleu I ran the script today for the first time and installed an overlay for elevator.zip. It placed everything in the correct spots but no overlay appeared in game. It did say that the elevator preset was active. I also noticed that the elevator preset became active on all mame roms after running.

I'm on a pi4, newest build. I removed the elevator.zip.cfg file in the ROM directory and was able to get the overlay working. Just wanted to post what happened to me since I'm on pi4 and there hasn't been much feedback.

Long time lurker and seldom poster here. I wanted to say I used this great script from @meleu for the first time last night and it blew my mind! My kids and I enjoy our arcade classics so much more with the great art on the sides of our widescreen display :) :)

THANK YOU for this hard work. it's great!

I'd like to highlight that kind messages like this injects enthusiasm in any project.

After 5 years contributing with open source projects related to retrogaming I saw that contributors in general are exposed to a lot of (undeserved) negativity. And messages like this make the difference. ;)
