Cursor error in command screen after xbox controller update- not possible to enter commands or get back in ESin
-
Hi There,
I've had trouble getting my xbox based controller (but like ps1 controller looking) working on PS1 games.
After following this thread for the first 2 steps https://pimylifeup.com/xbox-controllers-raspberry-pi/
the retropie user and login is asked in the command screen and normally it's not a problem to enter 'pi' and 'raspberry' on my little wireless keyboard (with usb receiver plugged into the raspberry) but! The cursor jumps after a few seconds to the start of the line and then its not possible to enter the login and password or anything, thus leaving me with no options to get back in ES. Also my ssh connection suddenly fails me. So the retropie gods have cursed me as I was just about to fix all the problems I ran into since purchasing the 3b+ and hours and hours of work seem to be lost. Unless anyboy knows a way to change some file on the sd card to get back in ES or do something through \\RETROPIE as this still seems to work- I
m f**d.Sorry for my English- I`m Dutch.
Any help would be deeply appreciated.Best Regards,
Tom -
@Stag said in Cursor error in command screen after xbox controller update- not possible to enter commands or get back in ESin:
The instructions on that site are wrong - you don't need
xboxdrv
to make your Xbox controller work. Can you give more details about your setup - https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first - and what modifications (apart from 'pimping' from the tutorial mentioned) you did ? Is SSH working - can you connect to your PI with Putty ? -
Thank you there.
I overclocked my 3b+ (1575) but no problems so far. I`ve managed to get SSH running. Is there anything I can do from there? -
@Stag Yes, to get pass the login screen follow the instruction in https://retropie.org.uk/docs/FAQ/#why-emulationstation-doesnt-start-automatically-after-an-update. If this your first time using a Pi, I'd recommend agains overclocking this early, the 3B+ model has enough CPU power for most things. Do you have a cooling fan for the overclock ?
-
Yes, but here
s the thing: the cursor gets stuck at the beginning of the line and becomes totally non-responsive. So there
s no possibility to enter anything- otherwise I would have used the default user and password and indeed change the boot options in rasp-config.
Since you can locate raspi-config as a file through winSCP connection, i was wondering if I could edit some lines there and restart the raspberry and get a proper boot?
I do have sufficient cooling btw. -

Ok cool- never heard of putty before. I`ll get it going and let you know if it worked. Thanks in advance!

@Stag cooling is not the only factor when it comes to overclock stability. Otherwise you could put your pi in your freezer and overclock to 5ghz! I would bet money that your 1575mhz overclock is not stable. That is an insane amount of overclock. The pi 3b+ stock speed is already pushing the limits of what's possible and I think picking up an extra 25-100mhz with overclocking is probably a best case scenario. I would highly recommend restoring your original config.txt while troubleshooting your issue and would recommend some serious stability testing after.

I wish I`d known this program sooner. Much obliged bro!! You just saved me from a very bad day :)
Quicksilver- the overclock shouldn
t be a problem according to some. I
m willing to restore the original setting- but do you have any advice for running n64 games smoother? Couldn`t get the hi-res packs to work. -
@Stag N64 on the pi is not limited by the CPU but by the GPU. Overclocking the ARM offers no benefit with a 3b+ for N64 emulation. Overclocking core_freq (GPU core) does give some benefit as well as a small boost to v3d_freq (only needed for a few games).

Ok thanks, that
s where I got the hi-res packs idea from but didn
t really the whole text. I`ll look into it.Btw, what`s up with these red letters?
-
@Stag You're using the wrong character in your text. The ` (backtick) is used to quote text, you're using it instead of the ' character (apostrophe).

ah ok - should be fine now.
