@alwaysavocado Looks like you disabled the Hotkey button or your Hotkey button is always set, causing the Start button to trigger the exit.
What controller do you have and how it's configured - did you set-up a dedicated Hotkey or you're using the Select button for it ?

I have a controller than looks like a SNES controller . For all games and systems I use start and select together to exit. It works on other systems but just snes the start button by itself exits . Does that sound like a hotkey still? Maybe I should go back into the dos prompt or something ? I forget what it’s called...

Yes, that's why I mentioned it.
Can you get the contents of the /opt/retropie/configs/snes/retroarch.cfg and post it on pastebin.com ? The same file can be accessed via file shares at \\retropie\configs\snes, if you don't have SSH enabled on your Pi.

@alwaysavocado how did you copy your ROMs over to the PI ? Did you use File shares or other method ?

@alwaysavocado Is your Pi connected to the network/internet ? Can you access the ROMs folder over File shares ?

I never set it up for Wifi. I always did the flash drive thing to transfer my files. What't the main screen called, like... Dos Promt, or something, I forget terminology, do I need to go there to reset something I wonder. Other emu's might be doing this , but SNES I use the most, and utilizing the start button more to get something going.

@alwaysavocado In the RetroPie system you have a File Manager entry. If you ever used Norton Commander (and it's numerous clones), you can use it to navigate the files and take a screenshot of the file I mentioned (well, its contents).

OK, so your retroarch.cfg is not altered. Try to re-configure you controller again. While doing so, skip the Hotkey assignment (long press A when asked to configure it), then choose 'Yes' when asked if you want to use Select as a Hotkey.
Re-test to see if your controller behaves better.

@alwaysavocado Your version is so old it probably before the Hotkey was introduced to the Input configuration, so Select is probably set automatically as Hotkey.

that is probably true I’ve never done any type of update and it is not on Wi-Fi is it easier to do an update with a flash stick USB style ?

@alwaysavocado Without an internet connection, it's not going to be possible to run an update. Besides, if you want to keep up to date, you should probably install a new image.

True, its not too difficult. Maybe I'll just save all my files and redo everything fresh. Its been far too long.
