Aspect ration, maybe overscan? Not sure.

@beezerhale said in Aspect ration, maybe overscan? Not sure.:
I did. Followed instructions online, mostly from ETA Prime.
So you can do it again :). You can always backup your whole installation - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Updating-RetroPie/#making-a-backup-option-1 - before doing changes or when you have a 'final' version you'd like to keep just in case the sdcard fails or something else happens.
-
I'm on it. I just wanted to make sure I was looking at the right thing. :) Thanks again. I've already made a back up of the sd card. I'll report back.
-
@mitu Ok. I logged back in using sudo nano /config.txt and it told me the file was being edited already and it was so zoomed in I couldn't navigate. I formatted the sd card and reflashed my image. No worries. I am back in the config.txt and here is what I see. https://imgur.com/gallery/9BMWoeP -- this doesn't change if I change the apsect ratio of the tv itself - 16:9, 4:3, zoom1, zoom 2 all have the beginnings of the lines cut off and the bottom of the page. I'm not sure how to proceed. Any input is welcomed and appreciated.

@beezerhale can you remove the SD card and plug it into your computer? As @mitu stated, the boot partition can be read by a windows computer. You could then make your edits to the config.txt from your computer using a program like notepad++
-
I am going to try that tomorrow. I'll report back. Thank you!

Ok, I figured out how to edit the config.txt. Wordpad++ opened it easily. I can now deal with that. Thank you all for the help and guidance. However, another (maybe related, maybe not) issue popped up. I have successfully changed the aspect ration in retroarch for each system to 4:3 or core provided and the settings stick with no issue except for the MAME/Arcade folder. They setting revert back to 10:6 (I think that was it) every time. No amount of saving , etc (same steps that worked with every other game system) works.
Any ideas on that? -
@beezerhale Did you use 'Save Configuration' from within RetroArch menus ? How did you save your video options ?
-
@mitu Yes, I turned configuration save to on before I made changes. It works for NES, SNES, and both Atari sections. Just not Arcade/Mame.
-
@beezerhale You shouldn't really be using 'Save Config on exit', has all sorts of unintended side-effects and it's not so flexible as the Remaps or Overrides (which can be saved per-core/game).
Try resetting the configuration file
retroarch.cfg
to default in thearcade
system by renaming theretroarch.cfg
file in the\\retropie\configs\arcade
file share and then re-installing one of the Libretro Mame emulators (lr-mame2003
for instance).RetroPie already uses the RetroArch's default of 'Use core provided Resolution', so you don't need to explicitly enable it.
-
@mitu Gotcha. I will get to that tonight or tomorrow if Game of Thrones gets in the way :). I'll report back. Thank you very much for the guidance and help.

I feel ridiculous. I read, and read, and read about overscan. I wiped the card and started over. Same issues. I changed aspect ratios. Nothing worked. As an afterthought I changed the resolution on the pi itself from "let tv choose" or whatever it said to "720" and guess what???? Everything looks like it is supposed to now. The resolution setting was keeping the aspect and overscan settings from working properly. Thank you guys for your help - maybe my issue will help someone else solve theirs.

Well, thanks for coming back with the solution and happy gaming.
