I seem to be able to do everything I want with the Pi 3b+ except:

    1. Running games with shader (to smooth pixels) AND with a frame Overlay (to have a TV look for example) will stutter badly specifically at 1080p.
    2. 60 fps on the XMB menu. It looks fine when using a low res screen like a CRT though, or even at 720p but I need that 1080p.

All the consoles that run well on the 3b+ are actually the ones I wanted, I don't care to emulate Saturn, Dreamcast, N64, GameCube or PS2. However, if N64 emulation becomes nice, all the better!!! (Seems to be the most likely one out of that group considering I can already play things like Ocarina of Time and Mario 64 on a Pi3b non +)

@jrb555 Come on, you have to get some Mario Kart 64 action in. I used to kill that game back in the day. I had just gotten my driver's license and I used to drive to my cousin's house for competitions. Once we got to drinking age we used to play "Whoever gets their score to end in five first picks out a shot for the loser". That was actually fun because if you were one point away and lost it gave you an automatic handicap and kept it fair. I'd be super excited to get Golden Eye working solid one day.

Oh, and that super fast awesome Quest 64 game that gave Final Fantasy a run for it's money :0)

Will GameCube emulation be a possibility?

I think 720p is ideal for the Pi 3b+, just do it! I run my 3b+ at 720p and it runs perfectly with shaders etc. I use zfast shaders and have bezels on all the emulators unless the emulator itself cannot use them (like GlideN64) and have had no problems. Zfast is my favourite shader and looks amazing at 720p, with no darkening of the image. I don't think the 3b+ is really a 1080p device, if you know what I mean, but it looks amazing anyway at 720p imho.

I'm looking forward to getting a Pi4, but I feel it's such a massive change for all developers that it's going to be a good year before we can see what it can do. So I think until then I'm going to stick with the 3b+. I don't think the Pi 4 will realistically do Saturn emu (though I would be thrilled to be proved wrong!), but I do expect it'll be much better for N64 and DC. Outside of that, the 3b+ is more than capable of what I want. Plus, mine's in a Mega Pi case! I don't want to lose that!

I'm keen to see Dreamcast, PSP and N64 emulation running at a better/full speed. I understand that Beetle PSX may be a possibility on the Pi 4, In the mean time CTR in double resolution in lr-pcsx-rearmed will be pretty cool.

Am I right in thinking that the Pi 4 has the specs to run (at very very low, unplayable speeds) the new Play! PS2 emulator? I think a similar situation may exist with Dolphin.

            Currently running:
Retropie 4.8.9 on a Pi Zero 2W (Overclock Settings: CPU 1400Mhz)
            ES-DE on a GMKtec K6 (Windows 11, 32GB RAM)

@George-Spiggott I suspect something similar with Play! and Dolphin, yes.

Really looking forward to turning my Pi4 (4GB) into a better Plex Media Server. I'm currently using an AtomicPi for my PMS and it works really well but don't like how everything is exposed as there is no real case and power is external. I'd rather a nice aluminum case for the Pi4 configured as the AtomicPi is configured. Just waiting on the hardware acceleration for the GPU so I can fiddle with some of the encoding/transcoding options.

I'm new to the Pi scene. So I'd like to ask.....

Are there any recommended console emulators that are currently compatible with the Pi 4 while we wait for Retropie ?

These are good suggestions! Thanks :P
And yes I did kinda come to the conclusion that the Pi3b+ is a 720p machine.
But for what I do it will still handle most (not all) things at 1080p.
I need 1080p because when I use it on a desktop environment, I sit close enough to the monitor to notice each blurry pixel if its 720p. Everyone's monitors here are all 1080p xD

@jrb555 My main pc monitor is at 1440p and I use RetroPie on a separate smaller 480p. Love those pixels, part of the charm, but only if its sharp image. Your tv or monitor have to scale up the 720p to its native 1080p and that is where blurryness comes. If you play on a native 720p monitor, the pixels will be sharp.
