Unable to Configure Controller
-
Greetings! Love this project and everyone involved!
2 years ago, I helped a friend built his RetroPie. He then got married, moved and dug up his Pie, which didn't work.
Found out his SD card was toast. To save him time, I built him an image and mailed it to him.Well, it boots up fine, but he can't figure his controller. Its a generic SNES one from Amazon that worked fine before.
I configured his using an Amazon Basics Keyboard. I asked him to press any button for a few seconds and nothing happens. Here is/my configuration:
Pi 3B+
PowerSupply: Stock that sold/came with Pi
RetroPie v4.4.9We could always just start from scratch, but he isn't the most tech-savy. Just opening the software to write the image/7zip is a bit rough for him.

If it's a wired connector, it should be almost plug'n'play - check that the controller is plugged in correctly and hold the
A
button when the input configuration screen is shown. You can also have him check the controller on a PC, just to make sure it's not faulty. -
I appreciate the reply. It is a wired generic SNES controller. The pie boots normally, then at emulationstation nothing happens when he presses and holds a button. I told him to use A, and even after 30 seconds, the configuration screen doesn't show.
He has one of those NESPi shells and just to be safe, I told him to connect the USB controller directly into the Pie. That still didn't work
My hunch is since I configured it for a keyboard and nothing else, he needs a keyboard to select input configuration and it should work from there.
He doesn't own a PC at all, which means he needs to buy a keyboard to test it.

If you configured a keyboard as controller in ES, I think the initial controller configuration screen would not show
If that's the case - and he gets the normal ES system carousel - then he'll not be able to configure the controller on 1st boot. He would, indeed, need a keyboard.
