Wave Gamepi 20 blank screen (raspberry pi zero)

I need help. I'm completely new to the raspberry pi scene. I've bought a GamePi 20 from a local store, everything came prebuilt (made for the pi zero/w), all I had to supply was the raspberry pi and sd card.

I have a raspberry pi zero wh. Everything seems to look good, the power is working and the pi light is green(not sure if it is good or bad). The problem is when I turn the screen on, all I get is a completely blank screen. I've downloaded the new retropie-4.5.1-rpi1_zero and wrote it onto my sd card, but nothing happens when I turn it on. I followed the instructions on the doc. I'm not sure if my sd card is the problem or not.

Hardware:
Rasberry Pi Zero WH
Transcend Micro SD card 8GB
GamePi 20
2.0inch IPS display
Powercable is sufficient 5V 2.5A, the official raspberry pi cable.
The GamePi 20 is powered from a 14500 lithium battery.

This doesn't seem like a plug-and-play device, you need some additional configuration to make it work. Look in the instructions for Recalbox to see how to modify the config.txt on the SD card and make the the display work - https://www.waveshare.com/w/upload/c/c7/Setting_for_recalbox.pdf.
Then, you'll need to install the mk_arcade_joystick_rpi driver - from the drivers section of the RetroPie-Setup script. After installing it, you need to configure the driver by creating an /etc/modprobe.d/joystick.conf file and adding to it

options mk_arcade_joystick_rpi map=4 gpio=5,6,13,19,21,4,26,12,23,20,16,18,-1

You'll probably need to enable Wifi on the PI (hopefully you got an Raspberry PI 0W) and also enable SSH to be able to access your RetroPie installation and install and configure the driver.

NOTE: if the gamepad buttons work straight up, after enabling the display - then you don't need to install the drivers and you can skip the driver installation and configuration.
