RetroPie - Emulationstation loading screen not showing. Help.
-
Hardware: Raspberry Pi 3
Power supply: Canakit supplied power supply
RetroPie 4.5.4
Built From: Built on top of Raspian Stretch
USB Connected devices: Rii keyboard, Logitech F310 controllerHello all. I literally wasted my entire Saturday trying to fix this, but this way above my "pay grade". I've had issues with my pi3b in the past, but this one I just cannot solve. It's frustrating because it just happened out of no where, I did not fiddle with any scripts or anything. It's very strange.
The issue: I boot the system, I see my splash screen, now after this part I always see a wall of text of the maker of the image, now I do not and nor do I see the emulation station 'loading configs screen'. Everything is blank/black for a good 10-15 secs and then emulation station boots up DIRECTLY to the main menu.
Problem: I'm fine with not seeing the loading screen, but because of this, it won't run autostart.sh which I need to run the background music script. Pressing F4 fixes this (I see both screens I am suppose to see when booting), but this is a temporary fix, I want to find the root cause of this. I've updated the retropie script, emulationstation, command line, everything. My only guess is that the image crap.
The WEIRDEST part is that I reflashed my microSD with a working image from July-2019 and it STILL does it!!!! Was this image timed to break in 2020?
I am open to using another method of having the pi automatically run autostart.sh has a plan B. Just a suggestion.

The timeout indicates you have a splashscreen configured (with a video ?) but the splashscreen produces just a blank screen, thus after the running timeout, you're just greeted with EmulationStation screen (which has started on another screen).
I did not fiddle with any scripts or anything. It's very strange.
You say that, but you're also complaining about the background music script, which is something you probably added, since RetroPie doesn't include such script.
Was this image timed to break in 2020?
No, there's no such thing.
So the question - did you configure your splashscreen with a video or image ? What does your
autostart.sh
file contain ? Do you use an USB stick for ROMs ?
Post yourcmdline.txt
also, maybe there's something added to the boot arguments that alters the boot sequence. -
Hi and thanks for the reply!

To reiterate:
Yes, when I boot the system, there's a 15 second initial splash screen (after the initial "rainbow" screen). After that splash screen, I used to see a screen with a wall of text that says "Supreme Unified Now Loading" followed by the typical "ES Emulation Station - Now Loading configs screen". Now I don't see the last two. Screen goes blank for 10-15 secs after the splash screen, and then it goes straight to the main menu of ES. Hitting F4 totally fixes the problem as mentioned, but I'd have to do that each time I do a system reboot. The odd part is that it was working perfectly before. The image had the background music script pre-installed as well. I didn't mess with it, just changed the music around in retropie/roms/music. Everything was working perfectly for the last 6 months.
#/home/pi/scripts/themerandom.sh
while pgrep omxplayer >/dev/null; do sleep 1; done
(sleep 10; mpg123 -Z /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/music/*.mp3 >/dev/null 2>&1) &
emulationstation #auto -

Sorry, but 3rd party images are not supported here - you'll have to contact the authors for support. Otherwise, use the image from retropie.org.uk/download and see if you get the same issue.

No problem. I literally just figured it out. I just updated everything, used a different BGM script and in raspi-config, I disabled and enabled the text splash screen, followed by using a custom splashscreen using the OFFICIAL script off emulation station. The custom scripts are trash, absolute trash. I have to be careful.
So I have a totally new issue now, non-image related.
I used SD Card Formatter to format my Micro SD to exFat, Windows 10 recognizes it....I used Win32 Diskimager to write my image, and now Windows 10 won't recognize it. Any idea how to fix this? I must fix this because I have to create a backup, now that I fixed it. I'd appreciate the help. Thanks.
