Is there a "progressive" list? Like start with these roms in FBN, then these on MAME2003 and those on MAME2010?

No, the advice is to start with the emulator you want and then get the correct ROM set collection for it. If there are games that are not supported by the emulator, then try to find an alternative for those games.

      ok then.

From your experience for a pi4 should this defualt be FBN, mame2003 or mame2010?

@e4rthdog I mainly use fbn on my pi4. I haven't done any thorough testing but I might be able to use mame2016 for games fbn can't run at all like system32 or are not emulated well like the mk games.

Seems like a good option. I will start with a full romset for FBN and if i meet problems with games i will go to mame2003/2010...

Start with FBNeo, if you find a game that's not supported, then you can try MAME2010 or MAME2003 with its corresponding ROMset.

Ok. Since my target is to eventually find the games that i want to have as favorites i am thinking to install a full romset for FBNEO but splited per genre with Simple Arcade Multifilter.

Then after some time i will have a master home-list that i want to have "permanent" and create a list from that one or just add it to retropie favorites... Is this viable?

The only thing to mention about mame2010 is that playing StreetFighter with 2 players is an issue. There's a long standing bug in libretro's mame2010 where there's something wrong with player 2 buttons (5 and 6). That makes that series of games in particular not well suited for mame2010 - well for 2 players anyway. One player is just fine.

@e4rthdog Mind though that lr-fbneo (i.e. the RetroArch core version of FB Neo) doesn't support dual-stick controls like the lr-mame-* cores do. So, you may have to use the MAME rom versions of dual-stick games on RetroPie like @mitu explained before.

I actually fixed this and closed the pull request due to personal issues with the libretro project thats not the place for it here the inputs are fixed here if you want to use the core properly

I have debated on moving from 2003 to 2010, how well do the cheats work? Are they similar to 2003? Some old threads here mention it isn't supported or there are some processes to enable it.

no idea if cheats are supported its shouldnt be hard to do if it isint just post an issue on github all the have to do is set a core option and load the cheat file is doable if it isint supported.

The route i went is as follows for anybody who has the same question

My primary emulator is FinalBurn Neo. Added around 300 Roms from the Arcade Manager classic list.

My secondary emulator is mame2003-plus for now where i added the full romset.

We are now going throught the "master" list of the ~300 games where we test it , and enable shaders if needed.

In cases where something feels off in FBA then we turn to mame2003+.

But the important stuff is that we started enjoying arcade games with my daughter :)

I dont want to hijack this thread but i have a question concerning MAME on Pi4 in general.
My intention is to wait until the official image is released (i have pattience!!!, that is not the Point :) ) and i hoped that a more current MAME-Port will be supported.

So is this just the current beta-status of MAME for Pi4, or will MAME2010 or MAME2016 really be the end of what is possible?

There's a PR for MAME (trakcing the current version), it will probably included at somepoint. You can always install lr-mame, which tracks also the current MAME, but I guess a 'native' MAME installation would be better.

@mitu thank you once again Mitu!
I will always go for the ´native´ MAME, i second this.
So i keep following the situation.
I am very satisified with my arcade-solution for my Pi3B+ (still dont own a Pi4 ;)) which is the combination of AdvanceMame + FBNeo, but of course i would like to see a newer version in the future.
As a die hard SHMUP-Fan i would love to play all the newer Cave-Shooters i.e.
But i am not in a hurry, even if takes till 2023 it is ok for me :D

@sirhenrythe5th lr-mame is incredibly slow. I forgot what game I tested but it was ~2x slower than mame2016 which was ~2x slower than mame2010. 2016 might be a viable option, but as I said previously, I haven't done any thorough testing. I do want to test out games fbn can't run.

I don't believe mame will get a speed boost with the gles3 driver? I might be wrong. Which is a shame because I really want the cave games to be full speed.

@GreenHawk84 I tried them now. Overclocked to 1.9Ghz using mame2016 and the crt-pi shader at 1080p.
                                      They're both fullspeed at ~54fps.

@Darksavior ooh, sounds promising. I am waiting for a Pi model that can fully run MK2 and UMK3 at current emulation.

Maybe even Killer Instinct? I am wondering what OpenGL on Pi4 does for games over what Pi3B+ does.
