@StigNasty there is no standard release of retropie on the pi 4 yet. It's still in development.

@quicksilver not true. They merged the rpi4 version with the standard a few months ago. There is no official image, but the latest standard version works pretty much flawlessly on rpi4 at this point. You just have to do your own install.

@StigNasty I think we are referring to the same thing and our discrepancy is a matter of semantics.

@quicksilver I got into it after the rpi4 came out, so I suppose I don't even think about the pre-made images. Went with a self-install as my first install. I wouldn't be surprised if the official is pretty close, as it's been working quite well (I haven't tried the newer dev builds, so not sure what has changed since the last official update).

@StigNasty Well even though you are referring to RetroPie on a Pi 4, it is not guaranteed to work. I have heard from others on my Return to Castle Wolfenstein topic that it is not working due to missing GLES library on Raspbian Buster.
It is only guranteed to work on the latest official release of RetroPie on other Raspberry Pi versions. Ex. Pi 3B+
@quicksilver Since it has come to my attention that more people are reporting that the ports are not working on their Raspberry Pi 4 or Raspbian Buster, I think it is a good idea to mention that it is only working on official releases of RetroPie here on the main page of the ports.

@StigNasty Yes it will come to the RPI4B in the future once we have an official stable release of RetroPie and Buster. Right now the platform needs to mature. At the moment if you want the port to work you will need to make some workaround with making sure that all the dependencies libraries that the port require are available on your RPI4B, otherwise the installation will fail.
According to my experience that will not be an easy task to accomplish, hence it is better to wait for it to be solved..

Just letting you know I did get it working. Where I went wrong is I thought the data files alone on the install disk would have been enough. I am on mac so no longer had the ability to install directly (my old windows box is long gone). I ended up installing it into a wineskin wrapper, then dragging the game folder out of that and into the ports/caesar3 folder, updating to the patched version and it loads right up. Sweet! I am on an RP4b running buster and the latest normal (non dev) release of retropie, so it does actually work.
One question that I have: is this port compatible with mods, like say the 1080p mod or widescreen mod?

You could try replacing the assets from a mod into the caesar3 folder and see if it works or not.

@StigNasty hey I know it's been over 2 years since you posted this but how did you make the wineskin to make it work? I have a Pi 4, followed the instructions, put the 2 asset folders (installed via the offline installer GOG version of the purchased game) into the /retropie/roms/Ports/Caesar 3 directory like the instructions said---Retropie kicks me right back out to the menu when I try to load it, don't know my way around Retropie well enough yet to know how to find an error message for more specific troubleshooting---any help appreciated:)

One bit of advice getting this to work on a Pi 4: make sure your asset files are in the
/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/ports/caesar3
directory, not a sub-directory, for the app to work, it looks for the files in this directory and the gog.com version of the game installed them into a sub called /app --- moving the files out to the parent directory did the trick
