N64 Not Cooperating on my Pie

Thanks all. So I went back and removed any previous versions of emulators for N64 currently installed, and then re-installed lr-mupen64plus-next (since it was the one most referenced in the link above). It does work, but most the games do not. The default settings for both video and audio are unplayable. I know N64 emulation is spotty on Retropie, but I expected a few winners here and there. So two questions:
First, I can't find any other plugins besides glide to experiment with. I thought I'd try some others, but in the core options menu, it only has the one. I thought it would install others by default. Can I add them? If so, where would I get them?
Second, is emulation on Pie so spotty that it's not worth the trouble? I'm going to need to be able to get more than a handful of games up and running well. Is there a single setup that works for most games? Like this plugin or that one is the best go-to, then tweak it with this other one over here for most the rest. Or is it just all over the place and unreliable? I guess what I'm asking, is what do you all use to get the most success rate out of most the games you wanna play (or playable enough to get through them)?

@AlphaBetaPie the pi 3 just isn't powerful enough and doesn't have a modern mobile GPU in it so your only going to be able to run a handful of n64 games well with it. The pi 4 is much better at N64 emulation but it still isn't perfect.

Yeah, I figured. I'm just trying to get a feel for what everyone else is doing on their Pie setups for N64, or if no one really messes with it? So I take it there isn't a typical core setup that works best? One that most can go to and say "hey, use this and a lot of games will play well enough to enjoy them?"
Also, when you say Pie 4 is better but not perfect, how much better? I never figured it would be perfect, but I'd hope it's at least passable. I mean not being able to play over half of a system games seems pretty bad overall. If you had to put a percentage of what Pie 4 can play of N64, what would you place it at? 20%? 40%?
-
@AlphaBetaPie no idea what the percentage is but the vast majority of the games I would care to play are working well. Most of the first party Nintendo and Rare titles work well.

Thanks for the info. So is lr-mupen64plus-next the go-to on Pie 4, or is there a more reliable core I should be using. Also, any idea on the question above (regarding why I don't have any other plugins installed by default)? A YouTube video I saw stated it should have multiple options in the quick menu, like rice for example. But I have just the single glide option (when installing from source under the packages menu).

@AlphaBetaPie I use mupen64plus-gliden64 as my default mainly because its still an actively developed plugin for mupen64plus. Lr-mupen64plus-next uses gliden64 but because it has retroarch tacked on it tends to not have the same performance.
Are you using a default retropie image? Where did you get the image from? It should have other plugins available for mupen64plus.

I'm using a default official image. But I removed the default N64 emulator and switched over to Lr-mupen64plus-next (because for my set up, I absolute have to have the Retroarch interface). But I made backups. Could I fish those plugins out of the default mupen64plus folder? If so, do I just drop them in the current n64 folder to make them accessible to Lr-mupen64plus-next?
And as a side note, how many times would you say you had to do a custom setup to get your games to work (IE: changing settings and configs per game)? Is it like every other games needs tinkering with it get it running? Or do you have a better track record using one plugin or the other? I know it's never a one size fits all, just trying to get a feel for the best overall one (as far as compatibility).
-
@AlphaBetaPie there are a lot less issues with mupen64plus on the pi 4 because the GPU doesn't cause as many issues. Most of the games I play don't require special configuration.

how did you remove it? assuming you removed it via retropie_setup, just reinstall it via the same. it's in main > mupen64plus.
