Pi1 B clean 4.6 install Dualshock config issue
-
I have recently dusted off my Pi 1 B with a Dualshock 2 controller and went through all the updates. Following updates, It advised me that my 2016 dated RetroPie install needed a new clean install as my version was no longer supported or update able.
On a new bigger SD card, I have installed version 4.6.1 but cannot setup the controller.
The config menu starts and I can map U D L R but pressing Circle/A/East does nothing and will not register. Neither does X/B/South, Square/Y/West or Start. Only the Triangle/X/North will register! Other buttons do not register either - Right Thumb and Left Analogue Up.
This looks a similar problem to post https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/25823/solved-start-and-select-stopped-working-after-update/2. but this solution has not worked for me.
I have bought a 2 amp power supply, downloaded RetroPie 3 times, tried on 3 different SD cards each time with 4 Dualshock controllers.
Any help appreciated. Thanks. Russ.

How are you connecting the controller? I know some psx controller adaptors gave me the same issues. Those blue triangle adaptors out there Have 3 different versions, and only versions 1 and 2 from around the early 2000s work in RetroPie Or any Unix based system like Mac OS. Too bad when you buy one on eBay or amazon, you have no Idea what version you’ll get. Also some of PS3 to ps2 adapters give a similar issue. I haven’t been able To figure out how to fix it.

I have connected with a PSX female to USB male and not one of the double triangle adapters you mentioned. All of my Dualshock controllers work perfectly with the ancient 2016 version of RetroPie that I am trying to update from. I am so pleased I kept that older version rather than writing over it. I can't even copy the data in the config file as the numbering has changed. UDLR was Button 4 6 7 5 and it now 9 10 11 12 but I have no idea on the others as I cannot get them to work!!

I have just tried a generic SNES 6 button knock off pad and that goes through the setup process OK but still no luck doing anything with the Dualshock controllers. Any ideas???

I have lost the will to live with this so the Pi 1 is going back in its dusty drawer up until the next version of Retropie comes out in the hope that it fixes the problem. Meanwhile, I am building a custom Arcade control panel complete with a joystick, a trackball, analogue flight stick and any one of three different ex-mouse spinner prototypes for when I can get the Pi 1 working. Thanks to all...

@russs15 can you give a link to the adapter? I found the same issue not only with newer versions of those blue triangles but also some of those PS3/PC USB to PS2 adapters. It just seems all these companies are just using the same encoder chip that just doesn't work well with linux. Even mac OS. Ive read online that they have issues in windows. But once users install the driver they work, so they arn't acting like standard HID devices.

@lostless thanks for the reply. This is the PS2 to USB adapter I have. It works perfectly in my old 2016 version of RetroPie and on my Windows 10 machines. It is just this newer 4.6 version of RetroPie that it screws up with!!

@russs15 Thats the exact adaptor I got that never worked with retro pie properly for me. It might be an issue with a driver that changed higher up the chain that's not related to RetroPie itself but raspian, or even in the core linux kernel.
