Looking to upgrade and need advice

@Gino48 Well the question is did you start with a 4.4 image or did you start with an older image and update retropie after?

" issue.txt".
Inside there it says raspberry Pi reference and a date of 2018-03-13. Guess I'm out of luck eh?This looks like the 4.4 image, released on said date and based on Raspbian Stretch, with 3B+ support. I think it will work on a 3B+ Pi model.
Anyway, get a new sdcard with the new system and try imaging the new system with your current system's image. -

I don't know how to do what you're asking me regarding imaging the new system with the current systems image. Any chance you can provide a video or step-by-step instructions? This is new territory for me.
Also, I'm not sure I'm going to be able to do what you're asking because this was an image downloaded from arcade punks. In other words, I don't have seperate folders for ROMs, bios, emulators, etc. In the SD card it mostly shows dtb files, img and dat files.
In the dtb section, there is a file called 3 b+ in there so hopefully I'm in luck and I won't have to do anything.
I just figured it was easier to get everything under one image without having to fetch everything separately which takes way longer. I just hope I don't have to re-download everything again because it took a long time to download a 64 gb file.
Can anyone shed some light on this?

Yes, that's easy - we don't support 3rd party images, especially the ones loaded with ROMs. Use the image from retropie.org.uk/download if you'd like support.

What difference does it make where retropie comes from? So if I downloaded it from there and got roms through torrent or other sites, you can give me support????
Reminds me of those Kodi forums where people need help with a third-party add-on and the forum refuses to assist.
Makes no sense to me because at the end of the day, all we want to do is entertain ourselves whether through games or movies. It's these stupid technicalities that bother me on forums. Neither you or I own these ROMs, yet we play the games. Because I didn't download the official retropie image I won't get help?? It's just nonsense.

It's exactly like that.

Sure, everyone wants their entertainment, without any 'technicalities' to disturb them.

How do you what ROMs/games I own or play ? Just because you may do so, doesn't mean others are doing the same.

How ironic, isn't it ? You are using the creation of the RetroPie project, yet you categorize as 'nonsense' its rules and principles - without which you wouldn't be here complaining.

Look, all I'm saying is that at the end of the day, we get these ROMs from a website or a torrent. Even if you own for example toejam & Earl on the Genesis (cartridge), doesn't mean you have the right to download the ROM on any particular site regardless if it's abandonware or not.
It just makes no sense to me that just because I downloaded the official retropie image and loaded my own ROMs through whatever means, that you will give me support.
I see no difference downloading an image with games included and ready to go.
The only difference is it's faster than putting it together yourself. It's kind of like, what's the point of a Kodi forum if you're not going to get help with add-ons?? What is the point of downloading Kodi if you're not going to put add-ons to stream things with?
And let's be completely honest here, nobody buys an Android TV box or a shield TV just to watch ESPN or the weather. Plus I'm sure that a lot of raspberry pi are sold because of retropie and access to all those free ROMs. I'm sure a lot of people use it for projects but realistically it sells because it's a great gaming machine that's cheap.I don't know how you get your ROMs but if you know another legal way then going through torrents or to another site, I'd love to know about it. For the record, I hate downloading through torrents because of viruses and all those pop-ups.
Either way, I understand that as a moderator you can't allow third-party software.... But it just seems funny because the games that we all play on retropie are done through illegal means.
Maybe there's people out there who actually take their cartridges and convert them into an image (I have no idea how this is done) but let's be frank, 99% of us don't own the games we are playing.Have a nice day I thank you for all the help from previous posts.

@Gino48 The problem is the people that make these images with roms included risk bringing down the wrath of big corporations like Nintendo, Sony etc., because it directly links emulation projects like retropie with piracy. What users do on their own time after they have acquired retropie is their own business and and nobody will be able to say that retropie encouraged or condoned it.
Also, unofficial 3rd party images are not supported because they are a PITA to troubleshoot. The end user has no idea what files and settings have been changed from default and when they run into trouble (which they invariably do) they come here looking for help and to be honest nobody wants to waste time trying to untangle that mess.

This is not just about ROMs or abandonware, etc. We don't support 3rd party images and that's it.

I don't want to start over if I buy a raspberry Pi 4 as it took me a long time to put this image together.

You lied. You refuse to start over fresh on a pi4 because you decided to stay ignorant on a DIY hobby. You ordered the old 3b+ because of this. /facepalm.
Arcade Punks have their own forum if you don't agree with the rules here.I see no difference downloading an image with games included and ready to go.
Their configurations are altered which produces bugs unique to those images. One of the reasons we won't troubleshoot those.

My 3b+ arrived last night and yes, the SD card image works. So relieved! 😁
Oh...and when I said that it took me a long time to put together I wasn't lying. Just because I didn't download everything required separately doesn't mean it was easy.
My computer is roughly 15 years old and it took a long time to transfer over everything to the SD card when the download was done. Had to keep the computer on overnight to finish the transfer. Not to mention downloading a 64gb file took all day.
So that's why I didn't want to start over. If that's a form of ignorance then so be it.
I got an awesome image with over 22,000 games on it. It took a long time to get that done so it's natural I wanted to preserve it and not start over. The new pie is running considerably faster and I am enjoying it thoroughly. Hell, I might do it the old-fashioned way and build something from scratch now that I have a faster board. I really didn't need a raspberry Pi 4 anyway because I wasn't using it to play harder games like Dreamcast, N64or PSP.
I have no regrets buying "old" hardware as you put it. I stand by my decision regardless of what anybody thinks. I also saved a lot of money going this route because all I ordered was the board and nothing else. I already have a power supply that works with it and a raspberry Pi 2 case that fits. If I bought the raspberry Pi 4, I would have spent double because I have to buy everything from scratch.
So what's that saying... Ignorance is bliss!!!
Yes sir it is. 👍
